Job Title: Instrumentation and Metrology Engineer

Job Summary:

The Senior Instrumentation and Metrology Engineer is responsible for leading the development, maintenance, and optimization of precision measurement systems and instrumentation processes. This role involves managing complex technical challenges, driving strategic initiatives, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. The senior engineer mentors junior staff, oversees critical projects, and provides technical leadership to enhance the accuracy and reliability of metrology and instrumentation systems.

Key Responsibilities:

System Leadership and Optimization:

  • Lead the calibration, maintenance, and testing of advanced instrumentation systems and precision measurement tools such as coordinate measuring machines (CMM), pressure calibrators, and laser measurement devices.
  • Develop strategies to enhance system reliability, improve accuracy, and reduce downtime through predictive maintenance and process optimization.
  • Analyze complex measurement data and implement advanced solutions to resolve discrepancies and enhance performance.

Technical Expertise and Problem-Solving:

  • Diagnose and resolve advanced technical issues in metrology and instrumentation systems.
  • Conduct root cause analysis for recurring issues and implement long-term corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of measurement systems into operations.

Compliance and Quality Assurance:

  • Ensure all calibration and testing activities meet industry standards such as ISO/IEC 17025, ANSI, and NIST.
  • Lead internal and external audits, ensuring full compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Develop and refine standard operating procedures (SOPs) and ensure consistent application across teams.

Project Management:

  • Oversee large-scale projects related to metrology system upgrades, new installations, and process improvements.
  • Develop project plans, budgets, and timelines, ensuring timely and successful delivery.
  • Coordinate with stakeholders, vendors, and suppliers to procure equipment and technical support.

Leadership and Mentorship:

  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior and mid-level engineers and technicians.
  • Conduct training sessions to enhance team knowledge and proficiency in advanced metrology tools and methodologies.
  • Act as a subject matter expert and consultant on complex instrumentation and measurement projects.

Innovation and Continuous Improvement:

  • Drive innovation by researching and implementing emerging technologies in metrology and instrumentation.
  • Lead initiatives to automate and streamline calibration and measurement processes.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement and lead efforts to enhance system efficiency and accuracy.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain comprehensive records of calibration activities, system configurations, and performance data.
  • Prepare and present detailed technical reports and recommendations to senior management.
  • Contribute to developing long-term strategies for maintaining measurement accuracy and system reliability.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Strategic Leadership: Lead advanced calibration and maintenance processes, ensuring system reliability and compliance.
  • Technical Problem-Solving: Resolve complex instrumentation challenges and implement innovative solutions.
  • Project Management: Oversee large-scale projects, including system upgrades and process optimization.
  • Team Development: Mentor and guide junior staff while driving knowledge-sharing and collaboration.

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • Extensive knowledge of metrology principles, including uncertainty analysis, statistical process control (SPC), and advanced measurement techniques.
  • Proficiency in advanced calibration tools such as CMM, laser measurement systems, and multifunction calibrators.
  • Strong understanding of industry standards and regulatory compliance (ISO/IEC 17025, ANSI, NIST).
  • Advanced project management skills, including resource planning, budgeting, and stakeholder communication.
  • Exceptional leadership and analytical skills to drive process improvements and manage technical teams.

Educational Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Instrumentation Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Advanced certifications in metrology or instrumentation (GD&T, ISO/IEC 17025) are highly desirable.

Experience:

  • 7-10 years of experience in instrumentation, calibration, or metrology roles, with a proven track record of managing complex projects and systems.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in mentoring teams and driving operational improvements.

Tools and Technologies:

  • Expertise in advanced diagnostic tools, calibration equipment, and metrology software (Minitab, MATLAB).
  • Proficiency in predictive maintenance tools and automation technologies.
  • Familiarity with data analytics platforms for performance monitoring and decision-making.

  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills to manage multiple high-priority tasks effectively.
  • Ability to work under pressure and make critical decisions in dynamic environments.
  • Commitment to maintaining safety, quality, and compliance in all operational activities.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally to support off-site calibration and system installations.
