Job Title: Instrumentation and Metrology Engineer

Job Summary:

The Mid-Level Instrumentation and Metrology Engineer is responsible for managing the calibration, maintenance, and optimization of precision measurement and instrumentation systems. This role involves troubleshooting complex instrumentation issues, implementing process improvements, and ensuring compliance with quality and industry standards. The engineer works independently, supports project execution, and mentors junior team members to enhance organizational measurement capabilities.

Key Responsibilities:

Calibration and System Maintenance:

  • Independently perform advanced calibration and testing of sensors, transducers, and precision instruments using tools like coordinate measuring machines (CMM) and pressure calibrators.
  • Manage preventive maintenance schedules to ensure the reliability and accuracy of measurement systems.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex issues in instrumentation and metrology equipment.

Metrology and Data Analysis:

  • Analyze measurement data to identify trends, inaccuracies, and potential improvements.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and implement advanced measurement processes.
  • Validate measurement systems to ensure compliance with technical specifications and industry standards.

System Optimization and Process Improvement:

  • Drive the optimization of calibration and measurement processes to enhance efficiency and reduce downtime.
  • Lead initiatives to upgrade and integrate new measurement systems and technologies.
  • Identify opportunities for automation and implement solutions to streamline metrology operations.

Compliance and Quality Assurance:

  • Ensure all activities comply with relevant standards, including ISO/IEC 17025, ANSI, and NIST.
  • Prepare for and participate in internal and external quality audits.
  • Develop and refine standard operating procedures (SOPs) for calibration and metrology processes.

Project Management and Collaboration:

  • Manage medium-scale instrumentation and calibration projects, including planning, execution, and reporting.
  • Coordinate with vendors and suppliers to procure equipment and technical support.
  • Act as a liaison between engineering, quality, and operations teams to align measurement processes with organizational goals.

Leadership and Mentorship:

  • Mentor junior engineers and technicians, providing guidance on calibration techniques and best practices.
  • Conduct training sessions to build team proficiency in advanced metrology tools and methodologies.
  • Serve as a technical resource for resolving complex instrumentation challenges.

  • Troubleshooting and Innovation: Diagnose and resolve complex issues while implementing innovative solutions.
  • Compliance: Ensure adherence to industry standards and support quality assurance efforts.
  • Leadership: Mentor junior staff and lead medium-scale metrology projects.

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • Proficient in using advanced measurement tools, such as coordinate measuring machines (CMM), surface measurement devices, and pressure calibrators.
  • Strong knowledge of metrology principles, including uncertainty analysis and statistical process control (SPC).
  • Expertise in industry standards and regulatory compliance (ISO/IEC 17025, ANSI, NIST).
  • Advanced troubleshooting and problem-solving skills for addressing instrumentation issues.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills for handling multiple tasks and priorities.

Educational Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Instrumentation Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Advanced certifications in metrology or instrumentation (GD&T, ISO/IEC 17025) are highly desirable.

Experience:

  • 3-5 years of experience in instrumentation, calibration, or metrology roles, with a proven track record of handling complex technical tasks.

Tools and Technologies:

  • Expertise in advanced calibration tools, including pressure calibrators, multimeters, and laser measurement systems.
  • Proficiency in metrology software and data analysis tools (Minitab, MATLAB, or Excel).
  • Familiarity with automation tools and technologies to streamline calibration and measurement processes.

  • Ability to work independently and manage medium-scale projects effectively.
  • Strong analytical skills to interpret data and recommend improvements.
  • Commitment to maintaining safety, quality, and compliance in all activities.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally to support off-site calibration and testing needs.
