Job Title: Instrumentation and Metrology Engineer

Job Summary:

The Junior Instrumentation and Metrology Engineer is responsible for performing routine calibration, maintenance, and testing of precision instruments and measurement systems. This role involves troubleshooting instrumentation issues, ensuring compliance with metrology standards, and supporting the optimization of measurement processes. The engineer works under minimal supervision to maintain the accuracy and reliability of instrumentation systems while contributing to quality assurance efforts.

Key Responsibilities:

Instrumentation and Calibration:

  • Perform routine calibration and testing of sensors, transducers, and other measurement devices to ensure accuracy and precision.
  • Utilize precision tools such as micrometers, calipers, coordinate measuring machines (CMM), and pressure calibrators for measurement activities.
  • Document calibration results and maintain detailed records for compliance purposes.

Maintenance and Troubleshooting:

  • Perform basic maintenance on instrumentation and measurement systems to prevent downtime.
  • Diagnose and resolve minor issues in measurement devices and systems under minimal supervision.
  • Assist in implementing corrective actions for recurring instrumentation faults.

Metrology and Process Improvement:

  • Analyze measurement data and identify discrepancies or trends affecting system accuracy.
  • Support the implementation of process improvements to enhance measurement reliability and efficiency.
  • Review and interpret technical drawings, specifications, and measurement standards to ensure compliance.

Compliance and Quality Assurance:

  • Ensure calibration and testing activities adhere to relevant standards such as ISO/IEC 17025, ANSI, and NIST.
  • Participate in internal and external audits to ensure compliance with quality management systems.
  • Follow safety protocols and ensure proper handling of precision equipment during all operations.

Collaboration and Support:

  • Work closely with senior engineers and cross-functional teams to address metrology and instrumentation challenges.
  • Assist in the commissioning of new measurement systems and tools.
  • Mentor fresher-level engineers and technicians on basic calibration and maintenance tasks.

  • Calibration and Maintenance: Independently perform routine calibration and maintenance of precision instruments.
  • Troubleshooting: Identify and resolve minor instrumentation and measurement issues.
  • Data Analysis: Analyze and document measurement data for compliance and quality improvement.
  • Compliance: Adhere to quality and safety standards in all metrology-related activities.

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • Proficient understanding of precision measurement tools and techniques, including micrometers, calipers, and CMM.
  • Basic troubleshooting skills for resolving instrumentation and measurement system issues.
  • Familiarity with quality and calibration standards (e.g., ISO/IEC 17025, ANSI, NIST).
  • Analytical skills for interpreting measurement data and identifying areas for improvement.
  • Effective communication skills for reporting findings and collaborating with team members.

Educational Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Instrumentation Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Certifications or advanced training in metrology or instrumentation (e.g., GD&T, calibration techniques) are desirable.

Experience:

  • 1-2 years of experience in instrumentation, calibration, or metrology roles.

Tools and Technologies:

  • Proficiency in using calibration equipment, such as pressure calibrators, multimeters, and signal generators.
  • Familiarity with metrology equipment, including coordinate measuring machines (CMM) and surface measurement tools.
  • Basic knowledge of data analysis software, such as Microsoft Excel, Minitab, or similar tools.
