Job Title: Instrumentation & Control Maintenance Technician (Power Plants)

Job Summary:

The Senior Instrumentation & Control Maintenance Technician is responsible for leading the maintenance, troubleshooting, and optimization of instrumentation and control systems in power plants. This role involves managing complex tasks, overseeing system upgrades, and ensuring the reliability and efficiency of Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), and SCADA systems. The senior technician also mentors junior staff, leads maintenance projects, and ensures compliance with safety and regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Advanced Maintenance and Calibration:

  • Lead the calibration, maintenance, and repair of advanced instrumentation devices, including flow meters, pressure transmitters, level sensors, and control valves.
  • Oversee the maintenance and optimization of SCADA, DCS, and PLC systems to ensure seamless operation.
  • Develop and execute comprehensive maintenance plans, ensuring minimal downtime and optimal system performance.

Complex Troubleshooting and Diagnostics:

  • Diagnose and resolve critical issues in instrumentation and control systems, using advanced diagnostic tools and techniques.
  • Conduct root cause analyses for recurring system issues and develop long-term corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with engineers and vendors to address and resolve high-level technical challenges.

System Installation and Upgrades:

  • Lead the installation, commissioning, and integration of new instrumentation and control equipment.
  • Oversee system upgrades and retrofits, ensuring compliance with project specifications and performance standards.
  • Validate and test new equipment and systems to ensure they meet operational requirements.

Performance Monitoring and Optimization:

  • Monitor and analyze system performance metrics, identifying opportunities for process improvements.
  • Implement optimization strategies to enhance the reliability and efficiency of instrumentation systems.
  • Drive initiatives to adopt predictive maintenance tools and practices for proactive issue resolution.

Compliance and Safety:

  • Ensure all instrumentation activities adhere to industry standards, safety protocols, and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct safety audits, risk assessments, and validations for safety-critical systems, such as emergency shutdown devices.
  • Promote a strong safety culture within the maintenance team through training and consistent enforcement of protocols.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain detailed records of calibration data, maintenance activities, and system configurations.
  • Prepare comprehensive technical reports and recommendations for system improvements.
  • Develop and update standard operating procedures (SOPs) for instrumentation maintenance.

Leadership and Mentorship:

  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior and mid-level technicians, fostering their professional development.
  • Coordinate and lead maintenance projects, ensuring effective resource allocation and timely completion.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align instrumentation activities with plant objectives.

  • System Optimization: Drive improvements in performance and reliability through advanced troubleshooting and diagnostics.

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • In-depth knowledge of instrumentation systems, including flow, pressure, temperature, and level measurement devices.
  • Advanced troubleshooting and diagnostic skills, with the ability to address critical system issues.
  • Proficiency in SCADA, DCS, and PLC systems, including configuration, maintenance, and optimization.
  • Strong project management skills for overseeing system upgrades and maintenance initiatives.
  • Comprehensive understanding of safety protocols, risk assessments, and regulatory compliance requirements.

Educational Qualifications:

  • Diploma or Associate’s degree in Instrumentation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Advanced certifications in instrumentation or control systems (e.g., Siemens, ABB, Honeywell) are highly desirable.

Experience:

  • 7-10 years of experience in instrumentation and control system maintenance, preferably in power plant or industrial environments.
  • Proven expertise in handling complex maintenance tasks and leading system optimization initiatives.

Tools and Technologies:

  • Expertise in diagnostic tools, such as oscilloscopes, loop calibrators, thermal cameras, and vibration analyzers.
  • Advanced knowledge of SCADA, DCS, and PLC platforms like Siemens TIA Portal, ABB, Honeywell Experion, or equivalent.

  • Exceptional leadership and communication skills to manage teams and collaborate with stakeholders effectively.
  • Ability to manage multiple high-priority tasks and projects in a dynamic environment.
