Job Title: Instrumentation Technician (Water Treatment)

Job Summary:

The Instrumentation Technician (Water Treatment) will assist in the installation, maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of instrumentation systems used in water treatment plants. This entry-level role provides an excellent opportunity to learn about the installation and maintenance of instruments that monitor and control water quality parameters such as pH, chlorine, turbidity, flow, and pressure. The technician will work under the guidance of senior technicians and engineers, gaining hands-on experience with water treatment instrumentation and automation systems while ensuring accurate and reliable operation.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Installation and Setup of Instruments:

    • Assist in the installation and configuration of instrumentation used for monitoring water quality and treatment processes, such as pH meters, chlorine analyzers, turbidity sensors, flow meters, and pressure transmitters.
    • Support senior technicians in wiring, calibrating, and setting up new instruments and control systems to ensure accurate data collection and system integration.
    • Help ensure that instruments are installed according to design specifications and safety standards.
  2. Calibration and Maintenance:

    • Assist with the calibration and testing of instruments to ensure accurate readings and compliance with water quality standards.
    • Perform routine maintenance and inspections of instrumentation systems, including checking for wear and tear, cleaning components, and replacing faulty parts.
    • Help in the calibration of flow, level, pressure, and chemical dosing instruments to ensure optimal performance in the water treatment process.
  3. Troubleshooting and Repairs:

    • Assist in diagnosing and resolving issues related to malfunctioning instrumentation, including identifying root causes and repairing faulty components.
    • Support the troubleshooting of electrical and mechanical issues in instrumentation systems, with the guidance of senior technicians and engineers.
    • Ensure that instrumentation issues are addressed promptly to minimize downtime and maintain operational efficiency.
  4. System Monitoring and Data Collection:

    • Help monitor the performance of water treatment instrumentation systems, ensuring that data from sensors is accurate and continuously available.
    • Support the collection of real-time data on water quality parameters, flow rates, chemical dosing, and other key operational metrics.
    • Assist in verifying that data from instrumentation systems is properly recorded and logged for reporting and analysis.
  5. Documentation and Reporting:

    • Assist in maintaining accurate records of calibration, maintenance, and inspection activities for instrumentation systems.
    • Help document repairs, replacements, and modifications made to instruments, ensuring that logs are up-to-date and compliant with regulatory standards.
    • Provide assistance in preparing reports related to equipment performance, maintenance schedules, and regulatory compliance.
  6. Compliance with Safety Standards:

    • Follow safety protocols and regulations when working with instrumentation, electrical equipment, and water treatment systems.
    • Participate in safety training and ensure adherence to plant safety procedures, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe work practices.
    • Help ensure that all instrumentation equipment operates in a safe and compliant manner to avoid hazards to plant personnel or the environment.
  7. Learning and Development:

    • Develop hands-on experience with various types of instrumentation used in water treatment, such as analyzers, flow meters, and level sensors.
    • Participate in on-the-job training, workshops, and seminars to improve knowledge of instrumentation technologies, water treatment processes, and maintenance procedures.
    • Continuously learn about new instrumentation technologies and best practices in water treatment systems.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Instrumentation Setup and Calibration: Assist in installing, configuring, and calibrating instrumentation systems used in water treatment.
  • Maintenance and Troubleshooting: Support the maintenance and troubleshooting of instruments to ensure reliable operation.
  • Data Collection and Reporting: Help collect data from water treatment instruments for performance monitoring and regulatory compliance.
  • Learning and Development: Develop technical expertise in water treatment instrumentation and process monitoring systems.

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • Basic understanding of instrumentation systems, including sensors, analyzers, and flow meters.
  • Familiarity with basic electrical and mechanical troubleshooting techniques.
  • Willingness to learn about water treatment technologies, process monitoring, and calibration procedures.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions carefully to ensure accurate system performance.
  • Good communication skills to work effectively with senior technicians, operators, and engineers.

Educational Qualifications:

  • Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Instrumentation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Basic coursework or training in instrumentation, control systems, or water treatment processes is a plus.

Experience:

  • No prior experience required; however, internships, academic projects, or practical experience in instrumentation or water treatment systems is advantageous.
  • Exposure to basic electrical and mechanical systems, automation, or instrumentation through academic projects or internships is beneficial.

Tools and Technologies:

  • Familiarity with instrumentation tools, such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, and calibration devices.
  • Exposure to SCADA systems, PLCs, and water quality monitoring instruments is beneficial.
  • Basic understanding of data logging and reporting tools for system monitoring.

Other Requirements:

  • Strong eagerness to learn and develop technical skills in water treatment instrumentation.
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented environment and follow the guidance of senior engineers and technicians.
  • Commitment to safety protocols and environmental regulations while working with instrumentation systems.
