Instrumentation Supervisor – Engine/Flight Testing

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Instrumentation Supervisor is responsible for the planning, execution, and supervision of instrumentation tasks for engine and flight testing. This includes the integration of sensors, data acquisition systems, and signal conditioning hardware, ensuring the accurate and safe collection of test data for validation, certification, and performance evaluation of aerospace systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Instrumentation Setup:
Oversee installation, routing, and connection of sensors (e.g., thermocouples, strain gauges, pressure sensors, accelerometers) on engines, airframes, and system components.

  • Sensor Calibration & Verification:
Manage calibration, functional checks, and validation of instrumentation systems to ensure signal integrity and accuracy.

  • Data Acquisition System Management:
Configure and maintain DAUs, telemetry links, and onboard recorders. Ensure synchronization, bandwidth optimization, and redundancy where required.

  • Team Supervision:
Lead a team of instrumentation technicians and engineers. Assign daily tasks, ensure safety compliance, and verify quality of installation and wiring.

  • Test Preparation & Support:
Coordinate with flight test engineers and program managers to meet instrumentation requirements for each test phase. Participate in pre-test reviews and system readiness evaluations.

  • Troubleshooting & Issue Resolution:
Investigate and resolve sensor malfunctions, wiring errors, signal loss, and DAU issues during installation and live tests.

  • Technical Documentation:
Maintain up-to-date sensor maps, wiring diagrams, test configurations, and calibration records. Document any redlines or deviations.

  • Safety & Compliance:
Ensure all work meets aerospace safety and regulatory requirements (FAA, EASA, AS9100, etc.), and conforms to engineering specifications and test protocols.

Key Focus Areas:

  1. Precision & Reliability:
Ensure all installed sensors and systems provide clean, accurate, and repeatable data under dynamic test conditions.

  2. Operational Readiness:
Deliver fully integrated and validated instrumentation systems in time for test campaigns with minimal troubleshooting required during critical operations.

  3. System Integration & Configuration:
Align instrumentation layout and architecture with platform constraints, data requirements, and test objectives.

  4. Cross-Functional Coordination:
Work closely with engineering, data analysis, avionics, and safety teams to ensure instrumentation solutions meet cross-disciplinary needs.

  5. Continuous Improvement:
Identify and implement process improvements to streamline instrumentation tasks, enhance safety, and improve turnaround time between test cycles.

Qualifications:

  • Degree or diploma in Instrumentation, Aerospace, Electrical, or Mechatronics Engineering

  • 4–8 years of experience in aerospace flight or engine test instrumentation

  • Proficiency in installing and calibrating sensors and DAUs for aerospace systems

  • Strong understanding of signal conditioning, EMI shielding, and aircraft wiring best practices

  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, technical documentation, and system schematics

  • Excellent leadership, communication, and troubleshooting skills
