Job Title: Instrumentation Designer (Electrical Systems)

Job Summary:

The Senior Instrumentation Designer (Electrical Systems) is responsible for leading the design and development of electrical systems and instrumentation in complex industrial, commercial, or manufacturing environments. This senior-level role involves overseeing the design of electrical circuits, control systems, instrumentation, and integration with other systems. The Senior Designer will collaborate with project managers, engineers, and clients to deliver high-quality, reliable, and cost-effective electrical designs while ensuring safety and compliance with regulatory standards. This role also includes mentoring junior designers and engineers and managing key aspects of the design process for large-scale projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Lead Electrical Systems and Instrumentation Design:

    • Lead the design, development, and optimization of electrical systems for instrumentation, control systems, power distribution, and automation.
    • Oversee the preparation of electrical layouts, control panel designs, wiring diagrams, schematics, and system integration designs.
    • Ensure that all electrical designs meet the functional requirements, project specifications, and relevant safety and regulatory standards.
    • Take ownership of the complete design lifecycle, from conceptual design through to the commissioning and final handover.
  2. System Integration and Performance Optimization:

    • Lead the integration of electrical systems with other plant systems, including SCADA, PLCs, HMI, and instrumentation, ensuring smooth communication and control.
    • Provide design solutions that maximize system efficiency, reliability, and safety while minimizing costs and energy consumption.
    • Conduct system simulations and analysis to ensure optimal performance and address any integration or performance issues before installation.
  3. Collaboration with Cross-Functional Teams:

    • Collaborate with engineers, project managers, procurement, and other teams to ensure that designs are implemented smoothly and efficiently.
    • Work closely with clients, vendors, and contractors to ensure the electrical systems meet client needs and specifications, and deliver on-time and within budget.
    • Provide design leadership and technical support during installation, testing, and commissioning to ensure systems operate as intended.
  4. Mentorship and Team Leadership:

    • Mentor junior engineers, designers, and technicians, providing guidance on design best practices, troubleshooting, and system optimization.
    • Conduct design reviews, offer constructive feedback, and ensure that junior team members develop and improve their design and technical skills.
    • Lead by example, promoting a culture of safety, quality, and continuous improvement within the design team.
  5. Safety, Compliance, and Quality Assurance:

    • Ensure that all designs adhere to industry standards, including IEC, NEC, OSHA, and other electrical safety codes and regulations.
    • Conduct risk assessments and identify safety hazards associated with electrical systems and instrumentation, proposing mitigation measures to reduce risks.
    • Review design work for accuracy and compliance with both internal standards and external regulations, ensuring quality assurance throughout the design process.
  6. Project Management and Coordination:

    • Manage multiple design projects, ensuring that deadlines, budgets, and quality standards are met.
    • Coordinate with other project teams and stakeholders to ensure the electrical systems are integrated seamlessly into the larger project.
    • Oversee the preparation of technical specifications, bid documentation, and procurement packages for electrical systems and instrumentation.
    • Monitor project progress, providing regular updates to senior management and clients on design milestones, challenges, and deliverables.
  7. Testing, Commissioning, and Troubleshooting:

    • Provide technical expertise during system testing and commissioning, ensuring that electrical systems function according to design specifications and performance standards.
    • Troubleshoot complex issues during installation and commissioning, providing solutions and support to ensure systems are fully operational.
    • Coordinate and oversee the testing of electrical and instrumentation systems to verify functionality, performance, and integration with control systems.
  8. Continuous Improvement and Innovation:

    • Stay current with the latest developments in electrical and instrumentation design technologies, tools, and best practices.
    • Drive innovation within the team by recommending new design approaches, tools, and technologies to improve system efficiency, reduce costs, and increase the speed of design processes.
    • Evaluate existing designs and systems to identify areas for improvement and implement changes to enhance functionality, safety, and reliability.
  9. Documentation and Reporting:

    • Ensure that all design work, including technical specifications, drawings, and reports, is well-documented and accessible for future reference or audits.
    • Prepare comprehensive design reports, including design calculations, component selection, and system integration details, for internal review and client presentation.
    • Maintain up-to-date records of all design modifications, system changes, and project decisions.

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • Extensive knowledge of electrical systems, including power distribution, control circuits, instrumentation, and automation.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, EPLAN, or similar tools) for creating electrical system designs and technical drawings.
  • Strong experience with SCADA systems, PLCs, HMI, and industrial automation integration.
  • Expertise in electrical design standards, safety codes, and regulations (e.g., IEC, NEC, OSHA).
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage budgets, schedules, and resources across multiple projects.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze and resolve complex system design and integration challenges.
  • Leadership and mentoring skills, with experience in guiding and developing junior designers and engineers.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, for documenting designs and interacting with cross-functional teams, clients, and vendors.

Educational Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Relevant certifications in electrical systems design, instrumentation, control systems, or project management (e.g., PMP, Six Sigma, PLC, SCADA) are beneficial.

  • Electrical Safety Standards and Codes (IEC, NEC)

  • Driving compliance with IEC, NEC, and global safety standards, conducting design reviews, and mentoring teams on safety best practices in instrumentation design.

Experience:

  • 7+ years of experience in electrical systems design, instrumentation, or control systems, with a proven track record in leading design projects for industrial, commercial, or manufacturing applications.
  • Extensive experience with the design and integration of electrical systems, instrumentation, and automation systems.
  • Proven leadership experience, with the ability to manage teams, mentor junior engineers, and manage complex design projects.

Tools and Technologies:

  • Advanced proficiency with CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, EPLAN) for electrical systems design and drawing creation.
  • Experience with design and simulation software for electrical systems (e.g., ETAP, MATLAB).
  • Proficiency with electrical testing and diagnostic tools (e.g., multimeters, oscilloscopes, insulation testers).
  • Familiarity with SCADA, PLC systems, and industrial automation design tools.

Other Requirements:

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple design projects and meet tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team to ensure the successful completion of design projects.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites and client locations as needed for design reviews, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
