Roles & Responsibilities

The Mid-Level Instrument Hook-up Drafter/Designer is responsible for independently preparing and updating instrument hook-up drawings, installation details, and MTOs in compliance with project specifications and industry standards. This role involves coordination with engineering teams and support for field construction through accurate and timely documentation.


Key Focus Areas & Responsibilities:

1. Hook-up Drawing Development

  • Prepare detailed mechanical and pneumatic instrument hook-up drawings for field devices like pressure/temperature transmitters, analyzers, control valves, and switches.

  • Incorporate installation accessories such as tubing, brackets, supports, impulse lines, and junction boxes.

  • Ensure drawings meet project specifications, ISA/IEC standards, and client requirements.

2. CAD Drafting & Layout Accuracy

  • Use AutoCAD, MicroStation, or similar drafting software to create and revise drawings.

  • Maintain correct layering, symbology, dimensioning, and annotation conventions.

  • Generate installation details, typicals, and fabrication sketches when needed.

3. Material Take-Offs (MTOs)

  • Generate and update material take-offs (MTOs) for supports, fittings, tubing, and installation hardware.

  • Coordinate with procurement teams to ensure MTOs align with project BOQs and schedules.

4. Technical Coordination

  • Interface with piping, mechanical, and electrical disciplines to resolve layout and routing issues.

  • Participate in internal design reviews and resolve redlines from QA/QC or site feedback.

  • Support construction teams with clarification and field modifications when needed.

5. Drawing Control & Compliance

  • Manage drawing revisions and ensure traceability through version control.

  • Comply with document control systems and project-specific drawing submission processes.

  • Follow client-specific CAD standards and best practices.


Key Skills & Competencies:

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD (2D essential); familiarity with MicroStation, SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI), or AVEVA E3D is a plus.

  • Good understanding of instrumentation types and field installation practices.

  • Knowledge of international standards (ISA, IEC) and project-specific design norms.

  • Ability to manage drawing deliverables within deadlines and collaborate with multidiscipline teams.


Qualifications:

  • Diploma or Degree in Instrumentation / Electrical Engineering / CAD Drafting

  • 2–5 years of relevant experience in preparing instrument hook-up and installation drawings

  • Previous experience in oil & gas, petrochemical, power, or process industries preferred
