Roles & Responsibilities

The Mid-Level Instrument Cable Tray Installer is responsible for the installation, alignment, support, and modification of cable tray systems used for routing instrumentation and control cables in industrial environments. The role involves independent work with minimal supervision, reading layout drawings, and ensuring installations follow safety, quality, and project standards.


Key Focus Areas & Responsibilities:

1. Cable Tray Installation & Layout Execution

  • Interpret routing drawings and installation standards to install cable trays (ladder, perforated, wire mesh).

  • Measure, cut, align, and secure cable trays on supports using appropriate tools and equipment.

  • Ensure tray installation is level, aligned, and properly supported as per mechanical drawings.

2. Tray Accessories & Support Structures

  • Install tray fittings including elbows, tees, reducers, couplers, and covers.

  • Coordinate with structural teams to ensure tray supports are fabricated and installed correctly.

  • Perform minor modifications on-site if layout or elevation changes are required.

3. Supervision & Coordination

  • Supervise or guide helpers and junior installers in daily tasks.

  • Coordinate tray routing to avoid clashes with other services (HVAC, piping, cable ladders).

  • Work closely with instrument technicians to ensure trays align with cable entry and termination points.

4. Quality & Compliance

  • Ensure cable trays are installed according to project QA/QC requirements and manufacturer guidelines.

  • Support site inspections and ensure punch list items are addressed promptly.

  • Maintain proper separation between signal and power trays as per standards (ISA, IEC).

5. Safety & Site Readiness

  • Follow all site safety procedures, including work-at-height and confined space requirements.

  • Participate in toolbox talks, risk assessments, and permit-to-work processes.

  • Keep the work area clean and free from hazards, and ensure proper handling of tools and materials.


Key Skills & Competencies:

  • Ability to read and interpret cable tray layout drawings, GAs, and P&IDs.

  • Proficient in using hand and power tools (grinders, drills, hacksaws, levels).

  • Understanding of tray types and appropriate installation practices (instrumentation vs. power trays).

  • Basic leadership and communication skills to coordinate with other trades and junior staff.

  • Knowledge of electrical/instrument cable routing requirements and tray spacing/segregation.


Qualifications:

  • ITI / Diploma in Electrical, Instrumentation, or a related trade

  • 2–5 years of hands-on experience in cable tray installation for instrumentation systems

  • Prior work in industrial or commercial infrastructure environments preferred

  • Awareness of relevant codes (NEC, IEC, ISA) is a plus
