The Mid-Level HVAC Technician (EPA Certified) performs preventive maintenance, service, and minor installation of HVAC systems in compliance with safety and refrigerant regulations. This technician is expected to operate independently on most tasks, diagnose system faults, handle refrigerants safely, and provide quality customer support on-site.
Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on a range of HVAC equipment:
Split systems, ductable ACs, rooftop packaged units, VRFs, air handlers, ventilation fans
Clean coils, blower assemblies, and condensate drain lines
Replace air filters, fan belts, contactors, capacitors, and thermostats as needed
Recover, evacuate, recharge, and test refrigerant systems in compliance with EPA guidelines
Use leak detectors, manifold gauge sets, and refrigerant scales to maintain system integrity
Handle refrigerant logs and documentation for environmental compliance
Independently troubleshoot common HVAC problems:
No cooling/heating, sensor failures, airflow restrictions, short cycling, electrical issues
Test motors, compressors, and controls using multimeters, clamp meters, and control diagrams
Replace fuses, thermostats, relays, or control boards under supervision when necessary
Assist with installing and commissioning ductable units, packaged systems, or VRF modules
Verify electrical and refrigerant connections, airflow setup, and thermostat programming
Perform system testing and calibration during handover
Maintain accurate maintenance records, refrigerant logs, and service reports
Interface with site engineers, property managers, or facility teams to explain findings
Educate clients on proper HVAC use and maintenance best practices
Adhere to job-site safety protocols (PPE, ladder safety, electrical isolation)
Comply with local HVAC codes, EPA regulations, and LOTO practices
Report unsafe practices, faulty tools, or equipment to supervisors immediately
✅ Independent Troubleshooting – Quickly identify and resolve standard HVAC faults
✅ EPA-Compliant Refrigerant Practices – Maintain environment and safety standards
✅ Field Reliability – Deliver consistent on-site performance with minimal supervision
✅ Customer Communication – Act professionally and clearly explain service actions
✅ System Efficiency – Maximize unit performance through routine tuning and adjustments
Diploma/Certification in HVAC Technology, Mechanical, or RAC
3–6 years of hands-on experience in HVAC maintenance/service
EPA 608 Certification (Universal or Type II) – mandatory
Strong understanding of:
HVAC electrical components and control systems
Refrigerant cycle and system pressures
Basic airflow principles, duct system layouts
Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and wiring diagrams
Familiarity with CMMS or job tracking mobile apps (desirable)
Excellent time management, customer handling, and documentation skills
Diagnostic Tools: Manifold gauge set, digital multimeter, clamp meter, vacuum pump, leak detector
Mechanical Tools: Pipe cutter, flaring tools, nut drivers, coil cleaner
