The Junior HVAC Technician (EPA Certified) assists in the installation, maintenance, and basic repair of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. With an EPA Section 608 certification, this role focuses on supporting safe refrigerant handling practices and learning diagnostic procedures under supervision.
Assist in performing routine maintenance on HVAC systems including:
Filter replacements
Coil and drain cleaning
Belt and pulley inspections
Thermostat checks
Record observations, temperatures, and pressures during servicing.
Aid in the installation of HVAC units such as split systems, ductable units, and mini-splits.
Support piping layout, mounting brackets, insulation, and minor ductwork.
Prepare work areas and tools for senior installers.
Recover, vacuum, and recharge refrigerant under supervision per EPA regulations.
Use manifold gauges and vacuum pumps during refrigerant system service.
Label and store refrigerants in compliance with environmental guidelines.
Help identify system issues such as reduced airflow, temperature inconsistencies, or noise.
Perform basic tests using tools like multimeters, clamp meters, and leak detectors.
Report findings to senior technicians for further action.
Complete service checklists, refrigerant logs, and job notes as per protocol.
Maintain a clean and organized service vehicle and toolset.
Ensure parts and materials are tracked and documented.
Follow all job site safety protocols, wear PPE, and adhere to lockout/tagout standards.
Handle refrigerants safely in accordance with EPA Section 608 regulations.
Participate in safety briefings and toolbox talks.

High School Diploma or GED
EPA Section 608 Certification (minimum Type II; Universal preferred)
Technical training or diploma in HVAC/R from a trade school or community college
Strong mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn
Familiarity with HVAC tools and basic wiring diagrams
Good communication and teamwork skills
Physically fit for rooftop and confined space work
Hand tools (wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers)
Multimeter, manifold gauges, vacuum pump
Refrigerant scale, leak detector
Safety gear: gloves, goggles, boots, hard hat
Frequent travel to residential and commercial sites
May involve work in hot/cold environments or rooftops
On-call availability may be required for urgent support
