Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

Job Title: HVAC Engineer – ASHRAE/SMACNA/API Compliant

Job Summary:

We are seeking a Senior HVAC Engineer with deep expertise in designing, analyzing, and managing HVAC systems across industrial, energy, and commercial sectors. The ideal candidate will have a strong command of ASHRAE, SMACNA, and API standards and demonstrate proven leadership in delivering code-compliant, energy-efficient HVAC solutions. This role involves leading multi-disciplinary teams, mentoring junior engineers, and ensuring quality across the project lifecycle—from concept to commissioning.

Key Responsibilities:

HVAC Engineering Leadership:

  • Lead the design and specification of advanced HVAC systems including pressurization, cooling/heating loads, hazardous area ventilation, and mission-critical airflow systems.

  • Guide all HVAC-related decisions and calculations, including psychrometrics, load analysis, energy modeling, and ventilation zoning strategies.

  • Direct development of HVAC system schematics, general arrangement drawings, P&IDs, and 3D models in collaboration with drafting teams.

Standards Compliance & Technical Assurance:

  • Ensure 100% compliance with ASHRAE standards (62.1, 90.1, 55), SMACNA ductwork and piping standards, and applicable API specifications (API 500, 521, 661, etc.)—particularly for oil & gas and heavy industrial environments.

  • Validate design solutions against international codes and client-specific technical requirements.

  • Provide expert review and sign-off on HVAC design packages, specifications, and quality checklists.

Project Execution & Oversight:

  • Manage HVAC scope on complex EPC and design-build projects, including cost estimation, scheduling, and risk mitigation.

  • Interface with project managers, contractors, and client engineering teams throughout design, procurement, and construction.

  • Conduct vendor technical bid evaluations and witness FAT/SAT testing for critical HVAC equipment.

Mentorship & Innovation:

  • Mentor and coach junior and mid-level HVAC engineers in technical delivery and best practices.

  • Lead internal knowledge-sharing on new HVAC technologies, decarbonization trends, and digital design tools.

  • Contribute to HVAC system optimization initiatives, including smart controls, energy recovery, and air quality enhancements.

Site and Commissioning Support:

  • Support construction, start-up, and commissioning activities, ensuring HVAC systems are installed and tested per design intent and compliance standards.

  • Lead HVAC walkdowns, punch list resolution, and performance verification.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Strategic HVAC system design and compliance

  • Technical leadership on cross-functional projects

  • Code adherence and lifecycle quality assurance

  • Advanced system troubleshooting and commissioning

Qualifications and Skills:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Building Systems, or related field

Certifications:

  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE or equivalent) – required

  • CEM, LEED AP, or BEMP credentials a plus

  • Membership in ASHRAE and familiarity with SMACNA and API updates required

Experience:

  • 8+ years of HVAC engineering experience in design, field support, and compliance-driven environments

  • Proven success with HVAC systems in oil & gas facilities, refineries, power plants, offshore platforms, or large-scale commercial/institutional projects

Technical Skills:

  • Mastery of HVAC software (e.g., HAP, TRACE 700, EnergyPlus) and BIM tools (Revit MEP, Navisworks)

  • Proficient in airflow design for hazardous and non-hazardous areas per API and NFPA

  • In-depth understanding of BMS/EMS integration, redundancy planning, and energy optimization

Soft Skills:

  • Strong leadership, mentoring, and team-building capabilities

  • Excellent communication and client-facing presentation skills

  • Strategic problem-solving and quality-focused mindset
