Gas Turbine Performance Engineer

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

We are seeking a technically proficient and results-driven Mid-Level Gas Turbine Performance Engineer to lead performance diagnostics, thermodynamic evaluations, and system optimization initiatives for industrial gas turbines. The role focuses on leveraging operational data, OEM modeling tools, and cycle performance principles to maximize reliability, availability, and efficiency across power generation or mechanical drive assets.

The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience working with gas turbine cycles, operational analytics, and performance modeling tools in power plants, industrial facilities, or OEM environments.

Key Responsibilities:

πŸ“Š Performance Monitoring & Evaluation

  • Analyze real-time and historical data to assess gas turbine performance, efficiency, and degradation trends.

  • Calculate and monitor KPIs including Heat Rate, Power Output, EGT Margin, ISO Corrected Output, and Specific Fuel Consumption.

  • Track and benchmark equipment condition against OEM baselines and site-specific standards.

πŸ” Degradation & Root Cause Investigation

  • Identify abnormal performance trends (e.g., fouling, combustion instability, compressor degradation, leakages).

  • Perform first-level root cause evaluations and recommend operational or maintenance actions.

  • Support cross-functional RCA investigations where performance degradation is a contributing factor.

πŸ”§ Modeling & Optimization

  • Utilize heat balance and cycle simulation software (e.g., GateCycle, Thermoflex, or OEM-specific tools) to model gas turbine performance under varying loads and ambient conditions.

  • Recommend tuning adjustments, inlet conditioning changes, or part-load strategies for performance optimization.

  • Support performance impact assessments of upgrades (e.g., DLN tuning, inlet fogging, blade path modifications).

πŸ§ͺ Test Planning & Execution

  • Develop and execute performance test procedures (pre/post overhaul, control logic updates, tuning interventions).

  • Coordinate with operations and instrumentation teams to ensure data integrity during tests.

  • Analyze test results and provide validation reports to support plant operations or warranty claims.

πŸ“„ Reporting & Documentation

  • Prepare clear and technically accurate performance reports, dashboards, and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.

  • Document performance trends, test results, and recommendations in alignment with plant reliability programs.

🀝 Stakeholder Collaboration

  • Interface with plant operations, maintenance, instrumentation, and controls teams to ensure optimal turbine performance.

  • Coordinate with OEM engineers on troubleshooting, performance guarantees, and upgrades.

  • Support planning and scheduling of performance-impacting maintenance activities.

Qualifications:

πŸŽ“ Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Thermal Engineering, or related field.

  • Master's degree or certifications in Thermal Power Systems, Gas Turbine Engineering, or Energy Analytics are a plus.

🧰 Experience:

  • 3–7 years of relevant experience in gas turbine performance monitoring, thermodynamic modeling, or power plant analytics.

  • Experience with turbine platforms such as GE Frame 6/7/9, Siemens SGT, MHPS, or Solar Turbines.

Technical Skills:

  • Proficient in Brayton cycle analysis, thermodynamic modeling, and turbine degradation assessment.

  • Strong knowledge of instrumentation, combustion monitoring, controls tuning, and BOP effects on turbine performance.

  • Tools: GateCycle, Thermoflex, PI System, Excel (advanced), Python/MATLAB (preferred), Power BI/Tableau (optional).

Soft Skills:

  • Analytical mindset with strong problem-solving abilities

  • Excellent technical communication and report writing skills

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with operations and OEM teams

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
