Fire Safety Systems Technician

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

Role Purpose

Install, test/commission, inspect, and maintain fire & life safety systems to meet project specifications, the UAE Fire & Life Safety Code, and authority requirements—delivering reliable protection, clean documentation, and on-programme handover while accounting for Sharjah weather and traffic/logistics constraints.

Systems in Scope (typical for Category-3 G+3)

  • Fire Alarm (addressable): panels, loop devices, sounders/beacons, interfaces, emergency voice/PA (if required).

  • Firefighting: hose reels, wet riser/landing valves, fire pumps (duty/standby/jockey), water storage tank & level controls.

  • Emergency & Exit Lighting (as per project scope).

  • Dampers/Pressurization interfaces (if specified), kitchen hood suppression (if any), and LPG safety interfaces (if present).

  • Portable extinguishers & fire blankets placement/inspection.

  • Firestopping verification at service penetrations.

Key Responsibilities

   Installation & Site Readiness

  • Install fire alarm devices, containment/cabling, and termination to approved drawings and manufacturer standards.

  • Fix firefighting equipment (hose reels, cabinets, landing valves), pump room auxiliaries, tank sensors/float switches.

  • Verify mounting heights, device spacing/coverage, labeling, and zoning per approved shop drawings.

  • Check firestopping integrity at penetrations and continuity of rated barriers.

   Testing, Commissioning & Integrated Cause-&-Effect

  • Perform point-to-point and loop tests, insulation/continuity, device addressing, and panel programming.

  • Commission fire pumps: priming, automatic sequences, jockey setpoints, duty/standby changeover, flow/pressure testing and curve recording.

  • Test emergency/exit lighting duration and signage visibility.

  • Execute integrated cause-&-effect: detector/call point activation → panel logic → alarms/PA → door releases → lifts recall (if any) → fans/dampers/pressurization → pump start → mimic updates, and record results.

  • Close snags quickly and prepare SCD pre-inspection packs.

   Maintenance (DLP/AMC Support)

  • Carry out weekly/monthly inspections: pump auto/manual tests, jockey operation, tank levels, FA device health, battery autonomy checks, extinguisher/hose reel condition.

  • Diagnose & rectify faults (nuisance alarms, open/earth faults, door release issues, pump control anomalies).

  • Keep logbooks, checklists, and statutory records audit-ready.

   Quality, Documentation & Handover

  • Work to method statements/ITPs; raise MIR/WIR and support consultant/SCD inspections.

  • Maintain as-built redlines (device addresses/zones), T&C sheets, pump test curves, battery calculations, room sound level checks.

  • Contribute to O&M manuals, spares lists, and operator training.

   HSE

  • Follow LOTO for electrical/pump works; hot-work permits (where applicable).

  • Safe working at height, confined space precautions for tanks/shafts, and pressure testing safety.

  • Manage chemical sealants/cleaners per MSDS; maintain tidy, well-lit plant and panel areas.

Weather & Traffic Considerations (Sharjah/UAE)

  • Heat & Humidity:

    • Schedule rooftop/pump-room works early morning/evening; comply with MOHRE summer midday break.

    • Ensure pump/electrical rooms have adequate ventilation/ambient control; protect batteries and electronics from heat; allow longer cure/setting times for sealants/adhesives.

  • Dust/Sand:

    • Keep panels, detectors, and pump strainers covered until late stage; clean devices and filters before final T&C; protect open ducts.

  • Occasional Rain/Coastal Influence:

    • Weatherproof outdoor sirens/beacons/junctions; check pits and tank rooms for ingress and sump operation; use corrosion-resistant fixings where specified.

  • Traffic & Logistics:

    • Plan off-peak deliveries for cylinders/equipment; coordinate SRTA/Police permits if curbside testing or tanker access affects roads; ensure clear access for SCD inspection vehicles.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Diploma/ITI in Electrical/Instrumentation/Mechanical (or equivalent).

  • 5–8 years fire systems install/commissioning/maintenance (UAE/GCC preferred).

  • Hands-on with addressable FA programming, pump controllers, emergency lighting tests, and integrated cause-&-effect.

  • Familiar with UAE Fire & Life Safety Code and project-specified standards (NFPA/BS/EN as applicable).

  • Basic English for reports; Arabic an advantage. Valid UAE driving license preferred.

Tools & Test Equipment (Typical)

Multimeter & insulation tester, loop/analogue addressable tester, programmer/dongle, sound level meter, smoke/heat testers & magnets, manometer/pressure gauge & flow meter for pumps, clamp meter, laptop, labeler, handheld vacuum/cleaning kit, PPE (harness, gloves, eyewear, respirator).

Core Competencies

  • Clean installation & systematic fault-finding

  • Accurate programming, zoning, and documentation

  • Safe commissioning under live-system conditions

  • Clear communication with consultant/SCD and end users

  • Housekeeping and protection of finished areas

KPIs

  • First-time pass rate on consultant/SCD pre-inspections ≥ target.

  • False alarm rate low (≤ agreed threshold) and rapid root-cause closure.

  • 100% on-schedule weekly/monthly pump and FA checks with complete logs.

  • Snags closed within SLA; zero repeat defects within DLP.

  • Zero HSE incidents; full compliance with midday break & site traffic plan.
