The Mid-Level Field Service Technician – HVAC Units is responsible for executing routine maintenance, diagnostics, troubleshooting, minor installations, and customer support for various HVAC systems. This role includes site visits, preventive care, breakdown response, and quality service delivery for packaged units, VRF/VRV systems, ductable systems, and split ACs in commercial and light industrial settings.
Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on HVAC systems, including:
Cleaning coils, filters, and drain lines
Checking electrical connections, thermostats, and refrigerant levels
Belt inspection/replacement, fan and motor servicing, lubrication of moving parts
Diagnose and rectify common operational faults, including:
Low cooling, tripped systems, airflow issues, sensor malfunctions
Faulty thermostats, clogged filters, drain blockage, electrical relay failures
Use gauges, leak detectors, clamp meters, and other tools to identify mechanical or electrical issues.
Perform tasks such as:
Refrigerant charging/vacuuming
Replacing or repairing contactors, capacitors, actuators, fan motors
Wiring corrections and control board assessments (basic level)
Escalate major faults or compressor issues to senior technicians or engineering support teams.
Assist with small to medium HVAC unit installations: split ACs, ductable units, VRFs.
Install copper piping, drain lines, brackets, and indoor/outdoor units as per layout.
Assist in commissioning: system testing, refrigerant charging, and startup verification.
Maintain service logs, daily work reports, and checklist documentation.
Coordinate with service coordinators for call closures and feedback collection.
Educate customers on system operation and preventive maintenance practices.
Follow job site safety protocols including electrical safety, working at heights, and PPE use.
Ensure refrigerant handling complies with local environmental and safety regulations.
Use lock-out/tag-out procedures where applicable.
System Diagnostics: Accurately identify and resolve HVAC faults with minimal supervision.

Field Efficiency: Prioritize calls, complete work efficiently, and minimize repeat visits.
Compliance: Adhere strictly to safety and refrigerant handling procedures.
ITI / Diploma in HVAC, Mechanical, or Refrigeration & Air Conditioning.
3–6 years of hands-on HVAC service experience.
Knowledge of packaged units, ductable splits, VRF/VRV, chillers (basic), and ventilation fans.
Proficient with HVAC tools: manifold gauges, leak detectors, multimeters, vacuum pumps.
Ability to read and interpret service manuals, schematics, and layout drawings.
Working knowledge of control systems, thermostats, and BMS integration (desirable).
Strong communication, time management, and job tracking skills.
Tools: Multimeter, manifold gauge, refrigerant scale, vacuum pump, torch set, coil cleaner, pipe bender.
Software: Job tracking or field service apps, Excel/Google Sheets (for logs), optional CMMS use.
