Job Title: Field Instrumentation Technician (Oil and Gas)

Job Summary:

The Mid-Level Field Instrumentation Technician is responsible for independently managing the maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of instrumentation systems in oil and gas operations. This role involves handling complex tasks, contributing to system upgrades, and ensuring compliance with safety and environmental standards. The technician plays a key role in ensuring operational efficiency, reliability, and the seamless integration of field devices with control systems.

Key Responsibilities:

Instrumentation Maintenance and Optimization:

  • Perform advanced calibration and maintenance of field instruments, including flow meters, pressure transmitters, temperature sensors, and control valves.
  • Independently manage preventive maintenance schedules to minimize downtime and enhance system reliability.
  • Analyze and interpret instrument data to identify trends and address potential inefficiencies.

Troubleshooting and Repairs:

  • Diagnose and resolve complex faults in instrumentation systems using advanced diagnostic tools.
  • Conduct root cause analyses for recurring issues and implement corrective measures.
  • Collaborate with senior technicians and engineers to ensure long-term system stability.

System Installation and Upgrades:

  • Lead the installation and integration of new field instrumentation equipment with SCADA/DCS systems.
  • Validate and test installed systems to ensure compliance with operational and safety standards.
  • Contribute to the planning and execution of system retrofits and upgrades.

Data Analysis and Reporting:

  • Maintain detailed records of calibration activities, maintenance schedules, and troubleshooting findings.
  • Prepare technical reports on instrumentation performance and suggest optimization strategies.
  • Update and refine standard operating procedures (SOPs) based on operational insights.

Compliance and Safety:

  • Ensure adherence to safety protocols, environmental regulations, and organizational policies in all field activities.
  • Participate in risk assessments and safety audits to identify and mitigate potential hazards.
  • Validate and maintain safety-critical systems, such as emergency shutdown devices and alarms.

Collaboration and Mentorship:

  • Work closely with operations, engineering, and safety teams to address instrumentation challenges.
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior technicians, fostering skill development.
  • Act as a liaison between field teams and management for reporting and system improvements.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Instrumentation Maintenance: Manage calibration, troubleshooting, and maintenance of complex field devices.
  • System Integration: Oversee the seamless integration and testing of new instrumentation systems.
  • Safety Compliance: Ensure strict adherence to safety standards and participate in risk management activities.
  • Mentorship and Collaboration: Support junior staff and contribute to cross-functional team efforts.

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • In-depth understanding of field instrumentation, including advanced calibration techniques and system diagnostics.
  • Proficiency in SCADA/DCS systems and industrial communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, Profibus).
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills for resolving complex instrumentation issues.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations, environmental compliance, and risk assessment practices in oil and gas.
  • Effective communication skills for collaborating with teams and preparing technical reports.

Educational Qualifications:

  • Diploma or Associate’s degree in Instrumentation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Certifications in advanced instrumentation systems or process automation (e.g., Siemens, ABB, Honeywell) are highly desirable.

Experience:

  • 3-5 years of experience in field instrumentation maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting, preferably in the oil and gas industry.
  • Proven ability to independently manage complex tasks and contribute to system optimizations.

Tools and Technologies:

  • Proficiency with advanced diagnostic tools, such as loop calibrators, oscilloscopes, and thermal cameras.
  • Expertise in SCADA/DCS platforms like Siemens WinCC, ABB, or Honeywell Experion.
  • Familiarity with predictive maintenance tools and data analytics for performance monitoring.
