Job Title: Field Instrumentation Technician (Oil and Gas)

Job Summary:

The Junior Field Instrumentation Technician is responsible for performing routine maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of instrumentation systems in oil and gas operations. This role involves independently managing basic tasks, assisting with more complex maintenance under supervision, and ensuring system reliability. The technician supports operational efficiency by adhering to safety standards and contributing to system performance improvements.

Key Responsibilities:

Instrumentation Maintenance and Calibration:

  • Perform routine calibration and maintenance of field instruments, including pressure, temperature, flow, and level measurement devices.
  • Inspect and clean field instrumentation to maintain operational accuracy and prevent downtime.
  • Verify the accuracy of readings and ensure proper functioning of control systems.

Troubleshooting and Repairs:

  • Diagnose and resolve minor faults in instrumentation systems using standard diagnostic tools.
  • Assist senior technicians in identifying and resolving complex issues to restore system functionality.
  • Maintain a record of issues identified and actions taken to ensure documentation compliance.

Installation and System Integration:

  • Assist in the installation and configuration of new instrumentation equipment in field environments.
  • Support the integration of field devices with SCADA/DCS systems, ensuring seamless communication.
  • Test and validate new installations to ensure compliance with operational requirements.

Data Recording and Reporting:

  • Maintain logs of calibration data, maintenance activities, and troubleshooting findings.
  • Prepare routine reports for supervisors, highlighting system performance and maintenance needs.
  • Contribute to updating standard operating procedures (SOPs) based on field experience.

Compliance and Safety:

  • Follow organizational safety protocols and industry standards in all field activities.
  • Participate in safety drills, toolbox talks, and risk assessments to ensure a safe work environment.
  • Ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adhere to environmental regulations.

Collaboration and Support:

  • Work closely with operations and maintenance teams to address instrumentation-related challenges.
  • Provide support for planned maintenance schedules and unplanned repair activities.
  • Assist in training and guiding fresher technicians in basic maintenance tasks.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Instrumentation Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance and calibration of field devices to ensure process accuracy.
  • Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve minor instrumentation issues, escalating complex problems as needed.
  • Safety Compliance: Adhere to safety protocols and contribute to maintaining a safe and compliant work environment.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate records of field activities and prepare reports for performance tracking.

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • Strong understanding of field instrumentation, including sensors, transmitters, and actuators.
  • Basic proficiency in troubleshooting and calibration using diagnostic tools such as multimeters and loop calibrators.
  • Familiarity with SCADA/DCS systems and industrial communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, Profibus).
  • Awareness of safety standards and environmental regulations in oil and gas operations.
  • Ability to interpret technical manuals, drawings, and process diagrams.

Educational Qualifications:

  • Diploma or Associate’s degree in Instrumentation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Certifications in instrumentation or control systems are desirable but not mandatory.

Experience:

  • 1-2 years of experience in field instrumentation maintenance, preferably in oil and gas or similar industries.

Tools and Technologies:

  • Proficiency with tools such as multimeters, pressure calibrators, and signal generators.
  • Familiarity with SCADA/DCS platforms like Siemens WinCC, ABB, or Honeywell Experion is advantageous.

  • Strong communication and teamwork skills to collaborate with peers and supervisors.
  • Ability to manage routine tasks independently while seeking guidance for complex issues.
