Failure Analysis / RCA Engineer – Turbines

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

We are seeking a motivated and analytical Junior Failure Analysis / Root Cause Analysis (RCA) Engineer to support turbine failure investigations and mechanical reliability improvement initiatives. This role focuses on assisting senior engineers in identifying causes of turbine component failures, conducting structured root cause analyses, and supporting corrective/preventive action development for gas and steam turbines.

Key Responsibilities:

🔍 Failure Analysis Support

  • Assist in the collection and organization of failure data for turbine components (blades, bearings, seals, casings, fasteners, etc.).

  • Support disassembly inspections, failure mode documentation, and metallurgical evidence gathering.

  • Contribute to the development of photographic documentation, dimensional analysis, and visual reports.

🧩 Root Cause Analysis (RCA) Activities

  • Participate in structured RCA methodologies such as 5 Whys, Ishikawa/Fishbone, or Apollo RCA.

  • Help compile failure reports, timelines, and operational histories for affected turbines.

  • Work with interdisciplinary teams to analyze potential causes: design, operation, maintenance, materials, or environment.

🛠️ Technical Documentation

  • Assist in preparing detailed failure investigation reports including observations, hypothesis, root causes, and corrective actions.

  • Maintain accurate databases of turbine failures and RCA case histories.

  • Document findings for knowledge-sharing and lessons-learned libraries.

🤝 Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Support collaboration with operations, maintenance, inspection, and OEM/vendor teams during failure investigations.

  • Attend team meetings, RCA workshops, and support internal audits or incident reviews.

🏭 Site & Lab Exposure (as required)

  • Visit turbine sites for inspection and failure analysis under senior supervision.

  • Interface with labs for NDT, metallurgical, and material characterization testing.

  • Learn and observe turbine operating parameters, failure triggers, and degradation mechanisms.

Required Qualifications:

🎓 Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Metallurgy, or related field.

🧰 Experience:

  • 0–3 years in a mechanical, reliability, or rotating equipment-related role (internships/co-ops included).

  • Exposure to turbines, power generation equipment, or industrial machinery preferred.

Desired Technical Skills:

  • Basic understanding of mechanical failure modes (fatigue, creep, erosion, corrosion, overload).

  • Familiarity with root cause tools: 5 Whys, FMEA, Fault Tree, Fishbone Diagrams.

  • Exposure to turbine design and operation is a plus.

  • Knowledge of industry standards (API 687, API 579, ASME, ASTM) desirable.

  • MS Office proficiency (especially Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio); experience with SAP or CMMS is a plus.

Soft Skills:

  • Detail-oriented and inquisitive mindset

  • Strong analytical and communication skills

  • Willingness to learn and take initiative

  • Ability to work collaboratively and take direction from senior staff

  • Able to travel occasionally to field sites for investigations
