Job Title: Electrical Technician

Job Summary:

The Mid-Level Electrical Technician is responsible for performing advanced electrical installations, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on electrical systems and equipment in residential, commercial, or industrial environments. This role involves working independently on more complex systems, diagnosing issues, and optimizing electrical system performance. The Mid-Level Electrical Technician will provide guidance and support to junior technicians, maintain high standards of electrical work, and ensure compliance with safety regulations and industry standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Installation and System Setup:

    • Independently install, test, and configure electrical systems, including wiring, control panels, circuit boards, and other electrical components.
    • Ensure proper system design and installation, adhering to electrical codes, specifications, and client requirements.
    • Set up electrical connections for equipment, machinery, and systems, ensuring all wiring is completed safely and correctly.
  2. Troubleshooting and Diagnostics:

    • Diagnose and troubleshoot electrical issues in systems such as motors, lighting, control circuits, and power distribution.
    • Use electrical testing tools (e.g., multimeters, clamp meters, insulation testers) to assess system performance and identify faults.
    • Resolve electrical issues promptly by replacing faulty components, repairing circuit boards, or reconfiguring wiring to restore optimal system function.
  3. Maintenance and Repairs:

    • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on electrical systems, machinery, and equipment to reduce downtime and ensure efficient performance.
    • Replace faulty electrical components (e.g., fuses, circuit breakers, switches) and ensure systems operate at peak efficiency.
    • Keep detailed records of repairs and maintenance activities to track system performance and identify areas requiring attention.
  4. System Optimization:

    • Optimize the performance of electrical systems and equipment by making necessary adjustments or upgrades to improve efficiency and safety.
    • Implement system improvements to enhance operational reliability, reduce energy consumption, and extend the lifespan of equipment.
    • Collaborate with engineering or technical teams to integrate new electrical technologies or update existing systems to meet operational needs.
  5. Training and Mentorship:

    • Provide technical support and training to junior electrical technicians, guiding them on best practices for installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
    • Ensure that junior technicians follow proper procedures, safety protocols, and work instructions to complete tasks effectively and safely.
    • Mentor and review the work of junior team members, offering constructive feedback and guidance to help them develop their skills.
  6. Health, Safety, and Compliance:

    • Ensure all work complies with local and national electrical codes (e.g., NEC, IEC) and company-specific safety protocols.
    • Conduct routine safety checks and ensure safe practices are followed when working with electrical systems, including lock-out/tag-out procedures.
    • Adhere to all safety standards and guidelines when performing electrical tasks to protect oneself, team members, and customers.
    • Participate in regular safety audits and inspections to maintain a safe working environment.
  7. Documentation and Reporting:

    • Keep detailed records of installations, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs, ensuring proper documentation for audits and quality control.
    • Prepare and submit reports on system performance, repair logs, and any recommendations for system improvements or upgrades.
    • Maintain accurate work logs, parts inventories, and time records for all tasks performed.
  8. Collaboration with Other Teams:

    • Work with engineers, project managers, and other technical teams to address electrical system challenges, improve system design, and implement changes.
    • Provide electrical support for various departments, such as manufacturing, facilities management, and construction teams, on electrical-related projects.
  9. Continuous Improvement:

    • Identify opportunities for process improvements, cost reductions, and enhancements to system efficiency and reliability.
    • Keep up-to-date with new electrical technologies, tools, and best practices, and apply them to improve the team’s work processes and performance.
    • Suggest process improvements or system upgrades based on observed inefficiencies, failures, or advancements in technology.

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • Strong knowledge of electrical systems, circuits, components, and tools, including wiring, switchboards, motors, PLCs, and control panels.
  • Proficient in using electrical diagnostic tools such as multimeters, clamp meters, insulation resistance testers, and circuit testers.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair electrical faults quickly and effectively.
  • In-depth understanding of electrical codes, safety standards, and regulatory compliance (e.g., NEC, IEC).
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, blueprints, and technical drawings.
  • Good communication skills to interact with team members, clients, and management to report on work progress and challenges.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to handle complex electrical issues independently.
  • Good organizational skills to keep track of maintenance schedules, project progress, and documentation.

Educational Qualifications:

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Technology, or a related field.
  • Relevant certifications in electrical systems, such as NEC, NFPA 70E, or other industry-recognized qualifications.
  • Certification in PLC programming, automation systems, or specialized electrical tools is beneficial.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Power Distribution Networks

  • Managing the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of power distribution systems, ensuring optimal performance and reliability.
  • SCADA and PLC Systems

  • Programming, configuring, and diagnosing SCADA and PLC systems, and integrating them into electrical networks for automation and control.
  • Electrical Safety Standards and Codes (IEC, NEC)

  • Enforcing compliance with IEC, NEC, and other safety standards during all electrical operations and conducting periodic safety assessments.

Experience:

  • 3-5 years of experience as an electrical technician, working with electrical systems, equipment, and machinery in an industrial, commercial, or residential setting.
  • Experience in troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining complex electrical systems.
  • Experience working with automation systems, PLCs, and control circuits is a plus.

Tools and Technologies:

  • Proficiency in using electrical testing and diagnostic equipment (e.g., oscilloscopes, voltmeters, power analyzers).
  • Familiarity with industrial control systems, PLCs (e.g., Siemens, Allen-Bradley), and automation tools.
  • Experience with CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Systems) for tracking work orders and maintenance schedules.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects, and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Willingness to work in various environments and settings, including industrial plants, construction sites, or residential settings.
  • Willingness to work on-call or outside regular hours for emergency repairs or scheduled projects.
