Job Title: Electrical Systems Calibration Technician

Job Summary:

The Mid-Level Electrical Systems Calibration Technician is responsible for calibrating, testing, and maintaining electrical systems and equipment within industrial, commercial, and manufacturing environments. This role involves handling more complex calibration tasks, leading calibration projects, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring the accuracy and performance of electrical systems. The technician will work closely with senior engineers, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and assist in optimizing system performance, ensuring compliance with safety standards, and implementing continuous improvement initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Calibration and Testing:

    • Independently perform calibration tasks for electrical systems, instruments, and components, ensuring they meet required performance standards.
    • Calibrate a variety of electrical equipment, such as voltage meters, current meters, oscilloscopes, and other precision measuring devices.
    • Perform functional testing on electrical systems to verify that they meet operational specifications and quality standards.
    • Implement advanced calibration techniques and procedures to ensure accuracy and consistency across systems and equipment.
  2. Troubleshooting and Problem Solving:

    • Troubleshoot and resolve complex calibration-related issues in electrical systems, identifying the root cause of problems and taking corrective actions.
    • Use advanced diagnostic tools (e.g., multimeters, insulation testers, thermal imaging) to assess and maintain electrical systems.
    • Lead the investigation of recurring calibration problems and develop preventive measures to ensure system reliability.
  3. System Optimization:

    • Assist in optimizing the performance and efficiency of electrical systems by reviewing calibration data and suggesting improvements.
    • Work with engineers to fine-tune electrical systems and equipment to ensure they meet performance, safety, and regulatory standards.
    • Monitor and analyze calibration data to identify areas of inefficiency and propose solutions to improve system functionality.
  4. Compliance and Safety:

    • Ensure that all calibration activities comply with internal quality standards, safety protocols, and regulatory requirements (e.g., NEC, IEC, OSHA).
    • Maintain a strong focus on electrical safety, ensuring proper procedures are followed, including lock-out/tag-out, while working with electrical systems.
    • Conduct safety audits and risk assessments on electrical systems, making recommendations to improve safety measures where necessary.
  5. Documentation and Reporting:

    • Prepare and maintain accurate documentation of all calibration activities, including results, adjustments, and maintenance performed.
    • Develop and update calibration procedures, manuals, and records to ensure systems and equipment are in compliance with industry standards.
    • Provide detailed reports on calibration activities and performance metrics, ensuring records are clear, precise, and well-organized for future reference.
  6. Mentorship and Collaboration:

    • Provide technical guidance and support to junior calibration technicians, sharing knowledge and best practices for efficient calibration and troubleshooting.
    • Collaborate with senior engineers and cross-functional teams to implement improvements in system calibration, performance, and efficiency.
    • Participate in meetings with engineering, production, and quality teams to discuss calibration findings, challenges, and opportunities for improvement.
  7. Maintenance and Calibration Equipment:

    • Maintain calibration equipment and tools to ensure they are in good working condition, regularly calibrated, and ready for use.
    • Ensure proper calibration of all measurement instruments used in the department, ensuring their accuracy and functionality for daily operations.
    • Coordinate with vendors for the calibration and servicing of specialized equipment as necessary.
  8. Continuous Improvement:

    • Actively participate in continuous improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing the efficiency, accuracy, and reliability of electrical systems and calibration processes.
    • Stay current with industry trends, technologies, and best practices in calibration and electrical maintenance.
    • Suggest and implement new technologies or techniques that improve calibration processes, enhance system performance, and reduce downtime.

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • Advanced knowledge of electrical systems, calibration techniques, and instruments.
  • Proficiency with electrical testing and diagnostic tools, such as multimeters, insulation testers, oscilloscopes, and power analyzers.
  • Strong understanding of calibration standards, safety procedures, and regulatory requirements (e.g., NEC, IEC, OSHA).
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, system documentation, and calibration reports.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to diagnose complex electrical issues and implement corrective actions.
  • Experience with industrial control systems (e.g., PLCs, SCADA, HMI) and their integration with electrical systems.
  • Excellent attention to detail and precision in performing calibration and testing activities.
  • Strong communication skills for reporting findings and collaborating with cross-functional teams.

Educational Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Instrumentation, or a related technical field.
  • Certifications in electrical calibration, safety (e.g., Six Sigma, OSHA, NEC), or industrial automation are a plus.
  • Additional training in electrical systems, calibration methods, or control systems is advantageous.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Power Distribution Networks

  • Calibrating and maintaining components in power distribution systems to ensure efficiency and reliability.
  • SCADA and PLC Systems

  • Performing advanced calibration and troubleshooting of SCADA and PLC systems for accurate and seamless operations.
  • Electrical Safety Standards and Codes (IEC, NEC)

  • Ensuring all calibration processes comply with IEC, NEC, and other relevant safety standards.

Experience:

  • 3-5 years of hands-on experience in electrical calibration, maintenance, or testing, with a focus on industrial systems.
  • Proven experience in troubleshooting and resolving complex electrical calibration issues and optimizing system performance.
  • Experience with using calibration tools and managing calibration schedules for electrical systems and equipment.
  • Familiarity with electrical measurement standards and best practices.

Tools and Technologies:

  • Proficiency with electrical diagnostic and calibration tools (e.g., multimeters, insulation testers, power analyzers, thermal cameras).
  • Familiarity with calibration management software or tools (e.g., CMMS).
  • Knowledge of industrial control systems (e.g., PLCs, SCADA, HMI), including their calibration and integration with electrical systems.

Other Requirements:

  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple calibration tasks and projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team to achieve maintenance and calibration goals.
  • Willingness to work in a safety-conscious environment and follow all relevant safety protocols and procedures.
  • Flexibility to handle occasional overtime or travel if needed for calibration activities or project deadlines.
