Job Title: Electrical Instrumentation Engineer

Job Summary:

The Senior Electrical Instrumentation Engineer is responsible for leading the design, implementation, maintenance, and optimization of complex electrical and instrumentation systems used in industrial applications. This role requires advanced expertise in electrical instrumentation, control systems, and automation, with a focus on improving system reliability, performance, and efficiency. The Senior Engineer will manage projects, mentor junior engineers, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and ensure compliance with safety, quality, and regulatory standards. This role is ideal for someone with extensive experience in electrical and instrumentation systems, looking to take on leadership responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Design and System Architecture:

    • Lead the design, specification, and development of advanced electrical and instrumentation systems, including control panels, sensors, actuators, PLCs, and SCADA systems.
    • Ensure that designs meet operational requirements, performance standards, and industry-specific regulations.
    • Oversee the creation of detailed technical documentation, including system schematics, specifications, installation guidelines, and maintenance manuals.
    • Provide technical expertise and guidance in the selection of instrumentation and control systems for large-scale projects.
  2. Project Management and Execution:

    • Manage electrical and instrumentation projects from conception to completion, including planning, resource allocation, budgeting, and scheduling.
    • Lead cross-functional teams of engineers, designers, and technicians to ensure that projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards.
    • Monitor the progress of projects, identify risks or delays, and implement corrective actions to keep the project on track.
    • Coordinate with other engineering disciplines (e.g., mechanical, civil) to integrate instrumentation and electrical systems into broader facility or plant designs.
  3. System Optimization and Troubleshooting:

    • Lead efforts to optimize electrical and instrumentation systems for performance, reliability, energy efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
    • Analyze system performance data and make recommendations for improvements or upgrades to enhance system operations.
    • Troubleshoot complex electrical and instrumentation issues, providing solutions to minimize downtime and ensure operational continuity.
    • Mentor and assist junior engineers and technicians in resolving difficult technical problems and applying best practices in troubleshooting.
  4. Maintenance and Reliability:

    • Oversee the development and implementation of preventive and predictive maintenance strategies to ensure the ongoing reliability of electrical and instrumentation systems.
    • Conduct periodic reviews of system performance and implement maintenance plans to prevent failures and extend the lifespan of critical systems.
    • Ensure compliance with safety standards and regulations during maintenance activities and ensure that all work is performed safely and efficiently.
  5. Compliance and Regulatory Standards:

    • Ensure all electrical and instrumentation systems meet regulatory, safety, and quality standards, including compliance with local and international electrical codes (e.g., NEC, IEC) and industry regulations.
    • Stay current with industry standards, technological advancements, and regulatory changes, ensuring systems are up-to-date and compliant.
    • Lead the preparation for audits and inspections, providing all necessary documentation and reports to demonstrate system compliance.
  6. Leadership and Mentorship:

    • Provide leadership to a team of engineers, technicians, and contractors, ensuring that all work is completed in a timely and efficient manner.
    • Mentor and train junior engineers and staff, providing guidance on best practices, troubleshooting techniques, and system design principles.
    • Foster a culture of continuous improvement and innovation within the engineering team.
    • Conduct performance reviews and provide professional development opportunities for team members.
  7. Collaboration and Stakeholder Management:

    • Work closely with project managers, operations teams, and other engineering departments to ensure that electrical and instrumentation systems align with broader project goals and operational needs.
    • Collaborate with vendors and suppliers to source equipment, materials, and components for electrical and instrumentation projects.
    • Maintain strong relationships with clients, stakeholders, and regulatory authorities, ensuring that systems meet their needs and comply with all applicable regulations.
  8. Documentation and Reporting:

    • Ensure all project documentation, including design specifications, system configurations, maintenance logs, and troubleshooting reports, are accurate and complete.
    • Prepare detailed reports on system performance, project progress, and other relevant technical updates for senior management and clients.
    • Maintain and organize records of all project-related documents, ensuring they are accessible for future reference or audits.

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • Extensive knowledge of electrical and instrumentation systems, including PLCs, SCADA, control panels, sensors, actuators, and automation systems.
  • Expertise in system design, integration, installation, and troubleshooting of complex electrical systems.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical codes, standards, and regulations (e.g., NEC, IEC, NFPA, ISO) and the ability to ensure compliance with industry requirements.
  • Proficiency in using electrical diagnostic and testing equipment (e.g., multimeters, oscilloscopes, analyzers) to troubleshoot and resolve system issues.
  • Experience with energy management, system optimization, and cost-reduction initiatives in electrical and instrumentation systems.
  • Strong project management skills, with experience leading large-scale electrical and instrumentation projects from inception to completion.
  • Leadership and team management experience, including mentoring and training junior engineers and technicians.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues.

Educational Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Certifications in electrical systems, process control, PLC programming, and safety are preferred (e.g., PMP, Six Sigma, NEC certification, PLC certifications).
  • Master’s degree or advanced certifications in instrumentation or control systems is a plus.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Power Distribution Networks

  • Leading the design, implementation, and optimization of instrumentation systems in large-scale power distribution networks.
  • SCADA and PLC Systems

  • Overseeing the development, integration, and troubleshooting of SCADA and PLC systems for high-complexity instrumentation projects.
  • Electrical Safety Standards and Codes (IEC, NEC)

  • Driving compliance with IEC, NEC, and global safety standards, conducting advanced risk assessments, and mentoring teams on safety best practices.

Experience:

  • 7+ years of experience in electrical instrumentation, control systems, and automation, with at least 3 years in a senior or leadership role.
  • Proven experience in managing and executing large-scale electrical and instrumentation projects.
  • Extensive hands-on experience with instrumentation systems, automation, PLC programming, and SCADA systems.
  • Experience in leading teams, mentoring engineers, and ensuring compliance with industry standards and safety regulations.

Tools and Technologies:

  • Proficiency in electrical design software, simulation tools, and instrumentation software (e.g., AutoCAD, MATLAB, LabVIEW).
  • Familiarity with PLC programming software (e.g., Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Rockwell) and SCADA systems.
  • Experience with CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Systems) or similar tools for work order management, scheduling, and maintenance tracking.
