Job Title: Electrical Design Engineer

Job Summary:

The Electrical Design Engineer Manager is responsible for overseeing the design, development, testing, and optimization of electrical systems, including power distribution networks, SCADA and PLC systems, and electrical control systems for industrial applications. This leadership role involves managing a team of engineers, ensuring the successful execution of electrical design projects, and ensuring compliance with industry safety standards and regulatory codes such as IEC and NEC. The Manager will also be responsible for driving innovation, fostering continuous improvement, and ensuring that electrical systems meet all operational, performance, and safety requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Leadership and Team Management:

    • Lead, mentor, and manage a team of electrical engineers in designing, developing, and testing electrical systems and components.
    • Set performance goals and provide guidance and support to team members, ensuring they meet project deadlines, quality standards, and compliance requirements.
    • Foster a culture of collaboration, continuous learning, and innovation within the team.
    • Conduct regular performance reviews and identify professional development opportunities for team members.
  2. Project Management:

    • Manage multiple electrical design projects, ensuring they are completed on time, within budget, and to the required specifications.
    • Oversee project planning, resource allocation, risk management, and scheduling to ensure the efficient and successful completion of electrical system designs.
    • Collaborate with project managers and other departments to define project scope, timelines, and deliverables, and manage client and stakeholder expectations.
    • Ensure that projects are executed in compliance with safety standards, quality control procedures, and regulatory codes.
  3. Electrical System Design and Development:

    • Oversee the design and development of electrical control systems, power distribution networks, and SCADA/PLC-based systems.
    • Lead the design of low and medium-voltage electrical systems, ensuring efficient load calculations, component selection, and system integration.
    • Ensure electrical systems are designed to meet performance, efficiency, and safety standards, including system capacity, fault tolerance, and protection.
    • Supervise the development of circuit diagrams, wiring plans, and other design documents to meet client specifications and industry standards.
  4. SCADA and PLC Systems Integration:

    • Oversee the integration of SCADA and PLC systems for industrial automation and electrical control applications.
    • Lead the design, programming, and implementation of PLC control systems (e.g., ladder logic) for automated electrical systems.
    • Ensure seamless integration of SCADA systems for real-time monitoring, data acquisition, and control of electrical systems.
  5. Compliance with Electrical Safety Standards:

    • Ensure all electrical designs meet regulatory standards and industry safety codes, including IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission), NEC (National Electrical Code), and other relevant guidelines.
    • Conduct regular safety audits of electrical systems to ensure compliance with safety standards and mitigate risks.
    • Ensure that safety protocols are followed during the design, installation, and testing phases of electrical system projects.
  6. Quality Control and Optimization:

    • Oversee the testing, validation, and optimization of electrical systems to ensure they meet the specified performance, reliability, and safety requirements.
    • Lead efforts to optimize electrical systems by analyzing data, identifying inefficiencies, and implementing solutions for improved performance and reduced costs.
    • Ensure that all design and testing documentation is thorough, accurate, and compliant with industry standards.
  7. Continuous Improvement and Innovation:

    • Drive continuous improvement initiatives for electrical system designs, implementation processes, and team workflows.
    • Stay current with the latest technologies, tools, and best practices in electrical system design, SCADA/PLC programming, and automation systems.
    • Research and implement new technologies to improve the efficiency, safety, and reliability of electrical systems and to meet evolving industry demands.
  8. Client and Stakeholder Management:

    • Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, stakeholders, and regulatory bodies regarding electrical system designs and performance.
    • Communicate regularly with clients to understand their requirements and ensure electrical designs meet their needs.
    • Prepare and present reports, proposals, and presentations to senior management, clients, and stakeholders, keeping them informed of project progress, challenges, and achievements.
  9. Budget and Resource Management:

    • Develop and manage project budgets, ensuring efficient use of resources and staying within financial constraints.
    • Optimize resource allocation, ensuring that the team has the necessary tools, equipment, and training to complete their tasks effectively.
    • Monitor and report on project costs, providing recommendations for cost-saving measures without compromising quality or safety.
  10. Documentation and Reporting:

    • Ensure that all design work, calculations, testing results, and maintenance procedures are well-documented and stored according to company standards.
    • Prepare and present detailed technical documentation, project reports, and status updates for senior management and clients.
    • Maintain an organized system for tracking project milestones, design changes, and deliverables to ensure transparency and accountability.

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • Extensive experience in the design and development of electrical systems, including power distribution networks, SCADA/PLC systems, and industrial control systems.
  • Strong project management skills, with experience overseeing multiple electrical design projects from concept to completion.
  • Expertise in PLC programming and SCADA systems design and integration for industrial applications.
  • In-depth knowledge of electrical safety standards, regulations (IEC, NEC), and industry best practices.
  • Proven ability to manage teams, mentor junior engineers, and coordinate cross-functional efforts to meet project objectives.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot complex electrical system issues and develop practical solutions.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to prepare reports, presentations, and technical documentation for various stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in electrical design software (e.g., AutoCAD Electrical, ETAP, Revit) and PLC programming tools (e.g., Siemens TIA Portal, Allen-Bradley Studio 5000).

Educational Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., PMP, Six Sigma, or electrical safety certifications) are a plus.

  • Establishing and maintaining design processes that ensure adherence to IEC, NEC, and international safety standards.

Experience:

  • 7+ years of experience in electrical system design, automation, power distribution, or related fields, with at least 3 years in a managerial or leadership role.
  • Proven experience in designing, implementing, and optimizing SCADA and PLC systems for industrial applications.
  • Hands-on experience with power distribution system design, including protection, fault analysis, and equipment selection.
  • Experience with regulatory compliance, including IEC, NEC, and other industry standards for electrical system design.

Tools and Technologies:

  • Proficiency with electrical design software (e.g., AutoCAD Electrical, ETAP, Revit).
  • Experience with SCADA systems and PLC programming platforms (e.g., Siemens, Rockwell Automation).
  • Familiarity with simulation and modeling software (e.g., MATLAB, Simulink, LabVIEW).
  • Experience with electrical testing and diagnostic tools.
