Job Title: Electrical Commissioning Engineer (Power Plants)
Job Summary:
The Senior Electrical Commissioning Engineer is responsible for leading the commissioning and optimization of electrical and control systems in power generation facilities. This role involves managing large-scale projects, ensuring compliance with industry standards, troubleshooting complex issues, and driving system performance improvements. The Senior Engineer provides leadership, technical expertise, and strategic guidance to junior engineers, technicians, and cross-functional teams.
Key Responsibilities:
System Commissioning and Oversight:
- Lead the commissioning and startup of advanced electrical systems, including turbines, generators, boilers, and auxiliary equipment.
- Oversee the testing, configuration, and integration of SCADA, Distributed Control Systems (DCS), and safety mechanisms.
- Validate system interlocks, control logic, and process integration to ensure operational efficiency and safety compliance.
Advanced Troubleshooting and Optimization:
- Diagnose and resolve complex system issues, ensuring minimal downtime and optimal performance.
- Conduct root cause analysis for recurring faults and develop long-term preventive strategies.
- Implement advanced optimization techniques to enhance system reliability, efficiency, and performance.
Compliance and Risk Management:
- Ensure all commissioning activities comply with industry standards (e.g., IEC, ISA) and regulatory requirements.
- Lead risk assessments and implement mitigation strategies for critical systems during commissioning.
- Conduct safety and emergency shutdown system validations, ensuring readiness and compliance.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Develop detailed commissioning protocols, performance evaluations, and project handover documentation.
- Maintain comprehensive records of system configurations, calibration settings, and test results.
- Prepare high-level reports and presentations for senior management and stakeholders.
Collaboration and Leadership:
- Mentor and provide technical leadership to junior engineers and technicians, fostering skill development.
- Collaborate with operations, maintenance, and safety teams to align commissioning activities with organizational goals.
- Act as the primary point of contact for clients, contractors, and vendors regarding commissioning projects.
Project Management:
- Manage large-scale commissioning projects, ensuring on-time and within-budget delivery.
- Oversee resource allocation, scheduling, and risk management for commissioning activities.
- Coordinate with cross-functional teams and external stakeholders to achieve project milestones.
Innovation and Continuous Improvement:
- Evaluate and implement emerging technologies to improve system commissioning and operational reliability.
- Lead initiatives to upgrade legacy systems and integrate modern solutions into power plant operations.
- Stay updated on advancements in electrical and control systems to maintain technical excellence.
Key Focus Areas:
- Power Generation Control Systems: Oversee commissioning of turbines, generators, and boilers to ensure operational readiness.
- SCADA and Distributed Control Systems (DCS): Manage configuration, testing, and troubleshooting of SCADA/DCS platforms.
- Thermal and Nuclear Plant Control Systems: Lead commissioning of control systems specific to thermal and nuclear plants.
- Safety and Emergency Shutdown Systems: Validate and optimize safety-critical systems for compliance and reliability.
Skills and Knowledge Required:
- Advanced knowledge of electrical systems, instrumentation, and power generation control systems.
- Expertise in SCADA, DCS, and industrial communication protocols such as Modbus, Profibus, and HART.
- Proficiency in root cause analysis, diagnostic tools, and predictive maintenance techniques.
- Comprehensive understanding of industry standards, safety regulations, and risk management protocols.
- Strong analytical skills for performance monitoring, optimization, and decision-making.
Educational Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Advanced certifications in SCADA, DCS, or industrial automation (e.g., Siemens, ABB, Honeywell) are highly desirable.
Experience:
- 7-10 years of experience in commissioning, testing, and optimizing electrical and control systems in power plants or similar industries.
- Proven ability to lead large-scale projects and resolve complex system issues in high-stakes environments.
Tools and Technologies:
- Proficiency in advanced diagnostic tools such as oscilloscopes, thermal cameras, and vibration analyzers.
- Expertise in software platforms like Siemens TIA Portal, Honeywell Experion, ABB DCS, and Yokogawa CENTUM.
- Familiarity with data analytics tools for monitoring and improving system performance.
