Job Title: Electrical Commissioning Engineer (Power Plants)

Job Summary:

The Mid-Level Electrical Commissioning Engineer is responsible for planning, executing, and overseeing the commissioning and testing of electrical and control systems in power plants. This role involves managing system functionality, troubleshooting complex issues, optimizing performance, and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards. The engineer works independently on projects, collaborates with cross-functional teams, and provides guidance to junior engineers and technicians.

Key Responsibilities:

System Commissioning and Testing:

  • Lead the commissioning of power generation systems, including turbines, generators, boilers, and auxiliary equipment.
  • Oversee the testing and integration of SCADA, DCS, and safety systems, ensuring they meet performance and compliance standards.
  • Validate control logic and interlocks for proper system operation and safety.

System Calibration and Optimization:

  • Calibrate and configure advanced instrumentation and control systems for maximum efficiency and reliability.
  • Optimize system parameters and ensure seamless integration with mechanical and process equipment.
  • Analyze system performance data and recommend enhancements to improve efficiency and reliability.

Troubleshooting and Problem Resolution:

  • Conduct advanced diagnostics to identify and resolve complex issues in electrical and instrumentation systems.
  • Perform root cause analysis for recurring system faults and implement corrective and preventive actions.
  • Collaborate with vendors and contractors to address technical challenges during commissioning.

Compliance and Safety:

  • Ensure all commissioning activities comply with industry standards (e.g., IEC, ISA) and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct risk assessments and implement safety protocols to mitigate hazards during commissioning.
  • Lead the testing of emergency shutdown systems and ensure their operational readiness.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Prepare detailed commissioning plans, test protocols, and performance reports.
  • Maintain accurate records of system configurations, calibration settings, and commissioning activities.
  • Generate handover documentation for operations and maintenance teams, ensuring clarity and completeness.

Collaboration and Leadership:

  • Work closely with operations, maintenance, and safety teams to align commissioning activities with project objectives.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to junior engineers and technicians.
  • Participate in cross-functional meetings to discuss progress, challenges, and recommendations for improvement.

Project Management:

  • Manage mid-sized commissioning projects, including resource allocation, scheduling, and budgeting.
  • Ensure timely completion of projects while maintaining quality and compliance standards.
  • Coordinate with clients, contractors, and stakeholders to address project requirements and deliverables.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Power Generation Control Systems: Lead commissioning of turbines, generators, and boilers to ensure operational readiness.
  • SCADA and Distributed Control Systems (DCS): Manage configuration, testing, and troubleshooting of SCADA/DCS platforms.
  • Thermal and Nuclear Plant Control Systems: Oversee commissioning activities for control systems specific to thermal and nuclear plants.
  • Safety and Emergency Shutdown Systems: Validate and optimize the functionality of safety-critical systems.

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • Advanced knowledge of electrical and instrumentation systems, including SCADA, DCS, and safety mechanisms.
  • Proficiency in industrial communication protocols such as Modbus, Profibus, and HART.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for troubleshooting complex system issues.
  • In-depth understanding of safety regulations, risk management, and emergency response protocols.
  • Ability to interpret and create detailed technical drawings, such as P&IDs and wiring diagrams.

Educational Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Certifications in advanced SCADA/DCS systems or industrial automation (e.g., Siemens, ABB, Honeywell) are highly desirable.

Experience:

  • 3-5 years of experience in commissioning, testing, and optimizing electrical and control systems in power plants or similar industries.
  • Proven track record in managing commissioning activities and resolving complex system issues.

Tools and Technologies:

  • Proficiency in diagnostic and calibration tools such as oscilloscopes, signal generators, and loop calibrators.
  • Familiarity with software platforms like Siemens TIA Portal, Honeywell Experion, ABB DCS, or Yokogawa CENTUM.
  • Knowledge of data analytics tools for monitoring and improving system performance.

  • Strong leadership and communication skills to mentor junior team members and collaborate with stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively under tight deadlines.
  • Commitment to maintaining safety, quality, and compliance in all commissioning activities.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites and participate in fieldwork as required.
