Job Title: Electrical Commissioning Engineer (Power Plants)
Job Summary:
The Electrical Commissioning Manager is responsible for overseeing the planning, execution, and management of commissioning activities for electrical and control systems in power plants. This role involves leading teams, ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards, managing large-scale projects, and driving optimization strategies. The Manager acts as the key liaison between stakeholders, ensuring timely and efficient delivery of commissioning projects while upholding organizational objectives.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership and Team Management:
- Lead and manage a team of commissioning engineers and technicians, ensuring alignment with project objectives.
- Define team roles, set performance goals, and provide mentorship and technical guidance.
- Foster a culture of safety, collaboration, and continuous improvement within the commissioning team.
Commissioning Oversight and Execution:
- Oversee the commissioning of electrical systems, including turbines, generators, boilers, SCADA, Distributed Control Systems (DCS), and safety mechanisms.
- Ensure the testing, calibration, and integration of instrumentation and control systems meet design and operational requirements.
- Monitor commissioning progress and address challenges to ensure smooth project execution.
Compliance and Safety:
- Ensure all commissioning activities comply with industry standards (e.g., IEC, ISA) and regulatory requirements.
- Conduct safety risk assessments and develop mitigation strategies for high-risk commissioning tasks.
- Lead the validation of emergency shutdown systems and ensure adherence to organizational safety protocols.
System Optimization and Performance:
- Analyze system performance data during commissioning and implement optimization strategies to enhance reliability and efficiency.
- Identify opportunities for innovation and introduce advanced technologies to improve commissioning processes.
- Develop and oversee preventive maintenance plans for commissioned systems.
Project Management:
- Develop detailed commissioning plans, including schedules, budgets, and resource allocation.
- Ensure timely delivery of projects while maintaining quality and cost-effectiveness.
- Coordinate with vendors, contractors, and internal teams to achieve project milestones and resolve technical challenges.
Stakeholder Engagement and Reporting:
- Act as the primary point of contact for clients, contractors, and regulatory bodies regarding commissioning activities.
- Prepare and present comprehensive reports on commissioning progress, challenges, and outcomes to senior management and stakeholders.
- Represent the organization in technical discussions, audits, and industry forums.
Key Focus Areas:
- Power Generation Control Systems: Oversee the commissioning of turbines, generators, and boilers to ensure operational reliability.
- SCADA and Distributed Control Systems (DCS): Manage testing, calibration, and optimization of SCADA/DCS platforms.
- Thermal and Nuclear Plant Control Systems: Lead the commissioning of control systems specific to thermal and nuclear power plants.
- Safety and Emergency Shutdown Systems: Ensure the operational readiness and compliance of safety-critical systems.
Skills and Knowledge Required:
- Extensive knowledge of electrical systems, instrumentation, and power plant operations.
- Expertise in SCADA, DCS, and industrial communication protocols such as Modbus, HART, and Profibus.
- Advanced diagnostic and troubleshooting skills for resolving complex commissioning challenges.
- Strong understanding of safety regulations, risk management, and emergency response protocols.
- Proven ability to manage large-scale projects and lead multidisciplinary teams.
Educational Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Certifications in SCADA, DCS, or project management (e.g., PMP, PRINCE2) are highly desirable.
Experience:
- 10+ years of experience in commissioning, testing, and managing electrical and control systems, with at least 3-5 years in a managerial role.
- Demonstrated success in leading large commissioning teams and delivering complex projects on time and within budget.
Tools and Technologies:
- Advanced tools for diagnostics and monitoring, such as oscilloscopes, thermal cameras, and vibration analyzers.
- Proficiency in software platforms like Siemens TIA Portal, Honeywell Experion, ABB DCS, and Yokogawa CENTUM.
- Familiarity with data analytics tools for tracking and optimizing system performance.
