This role involves taking ownership of commissioning processes, ensuring that all electrical systems and components are installed, configured, and validated according to design specifications, safety standards, and operational requirements. The Engineer will work closely with project teams, clients, and senior engineers to ensure the smooth integration and startup of electrical systems, troubleshoot any issues, and optimize system performance.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Commissioning and System Testing:

    • Lead the commissioning of electrical systems and equipment, including power distribution systems, switchgear, transformers, circuit breakers, PLCs, and control panels.
    • Perform system testing, including functional, performance, and safety tests, to ensure systems meet the required specifications and operational standards.
    • Develop and implement test plans, commissioning procedures, and schedules to ensure timely and efficient commissioning processes.
    • Review electrical designs, specifications, and drawings to confirm that all installation and commissioning activities meet the required standards.
  2. Troubleshooting and Problem Solving:

    • Lead the troubleshooting efforts for electrical systems, identifying and resolving issues that arise during the commissioning process.
    • Use diagnostic tools (e.g., multimeters, oscilloscopes, insulation testers) to troubleshoot electrical faults and resolve issues related to wiring, protection systems, and equipment performance.
    • Work with project teams to address technical problems and provide solutions that minimize system downtime and optimize performance.
  3. Project Management and Coordination:

    • Coordinate commissioning activities with project managers, engineers, and other teams to ensure that electrical systems are commissioned on time and within budget.
    • Monitor the progress of commissioning activities, provide updates to stakeholders, and ensure the successful integration of electrical systems into the overall project.
    • Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards during the commissioning process, following relevant safety regulations (e.g., NEC, IEC, OSHA).
  4. System Integration and Performance Optimization:

    • Oversee the integration of electrical systems with other industrial systems (e.g., SCADA, automation systems, process control systems), ensuring proper functionality and synchronization.
    • Perform performance tuning and optimization of electrical systems to improve efficiency, reduce energy consumption, and enhance system reliability.
    • Ensure that all systems and components are fully operational and optimized for peak performance before handover to operations.
  5. Documentation and Reporting:

    • Prepare and maintain detailed commissioning documentation, including commissioning reports, test results, inspection logs, and corrective action reports.
    • Ensure that all commissioning activities are documented accurately and in compliance with company and regulatory standards.
    • Provide detailed feedback to project teams on the status of commissioning, highlighting any issues or delays that need to be addressed.
  6. Collaboration with Cross-Functional Teams:

    • Work closely with design engineers, project managers, and operations teams to ensure that all electrical systems are designed, installed, and tested to meet operational and safety standards.
    • Communicate effectively with clients, vendors, and other stakeholders to ensure alignment on project objectives and deliverables.
    • Provide technical support and advice to clients during the commissioning phase and offer solutions for any operational challenges they face.
  7. Safety and Compliance:

    • Ensure that all commissioning work adheres to safety standards and follows lock-out/tag-out procedures and electrical safety regulations.
    • Lead safety audits and risk assessments during the commissioning phase, ensuring that potential hazards are identified and mitigated.
    • Ensure compliance with local, national, and international electrical codes (e.g., NEC, IEC) and industry standards during all commissioning activities.
  8. Mentorship and Training:

    • Mentor junior engineers and commissioning technicians, providing guidance and sharing knowledge to help them develop their skills and expertise.
    • Lead training sessions for team members on commissioning procedures, safety practices, and troubleshooting techniques.
    • Ensure that the team is up to date with the latest technologies, tools, and commissioning practices.

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • Strong understanding of electrical systems, power distribution, protection schemes, control systems, and instrumentation.
  • In-depth knowledge of commissioning processes, testing, and validation of electrical systems.
  • Proficiency in troubleshooting electrical systems using diagnostic tools (e.g., multimeters, insulation testers, oscilloscopes).
  • Solid understanding of electrical safety standards, codes (e.g., NEC, IEC), and regulatory compliance (e.g., OSHA).
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, drawings, and technical manuals.
  • Strong project management skills, including the ability to manage timelines, resources, and budgets.
  • Good communication skills to work effectively with internal teams, clients, and external vendors.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple tasks to meet deadlines.

Educational Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Certifications in electrical commissioning, project management, or control systems (e.g., Six Sigma, PMP, PLC, SCADA) are a plus.

Experience:

  • 3-5 years of experience in electrical commissioning, testing, or related engineering roles, with a strong focus on commissioning electrical systems.
  • Proven experience in troubleshooting, testing, and optimizing electrical systems in industrial or commercial environments.
