Job Title: Electrical Commissioning Engineer

Job Summary:

The Electrical Commissioning Engineer Manager is responsible for overseeing the commissioning, testing, and integration of electrical systems for industrial, commercial, or manufacturing projects. This leadership role combines technical expertise, project management, and team leadership to ensure that all electrical systems are installed, validated, and optimized according to the highest standards of safety, performance, and regulatory compliance. The Manager will lead a team of engineers and technicians, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and ensure the successful execution of commissioning projects within scope, budget, and timeline.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Leadership and Team Management:

    • Lead, manage, and mentor a team of electrical commissioning engineers and technicians, ensuring they are well-trained, motivated, and equipped to perform their roles effectively.
    • Oversee the day-to-day activities of the commissioning team, ensuring that tasks are completed on time and in accordance with project requirements and safety standards.
    • Set performance goals for team members, conduct performance reviews, and provide regular feedback to promote professional development.
    • Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement within the commissioning team.
  2. Project Management and Execution:

    • Manage and coordinate the overall commissioning process for electrical systems, including power distribution systems, generators, transformers, circuit breakers, switchgear, and control systems.
    • Develop and manage commissioning schedules, ensuring all activities are completed according to the project timeline and meet client expectations.
    • Work closely with project managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to ensure that commissioning activities are well-integrated into the larger project scope and timeline.
    • Monitor the commissioning progress and handle any deviations from the plan, making adjustments to ensure that the project stays on track.
  3. System Commissioning and Testing:

    • Oversee the commissioning and testing of electrical systems, ensuring they are fully operational and meet required performance and safety standards.
    • Lead the testing and validation of electrical systems, including conducting performance tests, system integration tests, and troubleshooting issues as they arise.
    • Ensure the proper integration of electrical systems with automation, control, and safety systems, verifying functionality and optimizing performance.
    • Work with engineers to resolve technical issues encountered during the commissioning process, ensuring minimal system downtime.
  4. Quality Assurance and Compliance:

    • Ensure that all commissioning activities are in compliance with safety standards, regulatory codes (e.g., NEC, IEC, OSHA), and industry best practices.
    • Develop and implement quality control measures for commissioning activities, ensuring all systems are installed, tested, and commissioned according to established standards.
    • Conduct safety audits and reviews during the commissioning phase to ensure the safety of personnel and the integrity of the electrical systems.
    • Oversee the documentation of commissioning activities, including test results, system settings, and modifications made during commissioning, ensuring compliance with internal and regulatory requirements.
  5. Stakeholder Communication and Reporting:

    • Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, providing regular updates on commissioning progress, challenges, and project milestones.
    • Prepare and present commissioning reports to senior management, clients, and other stakeholders, summarizing commissioning outcomes, system performance, and any necessary corrective actions.
    • Actively participate in project meetings, offering technical guidance and feedback on commissioning processes and deliverables.
    • Ensure that all documentation is organized, accurate, and accessible for future audits or system upgrades.
  6. Resource and Budget Management:

    • Manage the commissioning department's budget, ensuring the efficient use of resources and staying within budgetary constraints for commissioning projects.
    • Oversee the procurement of equipment, tools, and materials required for commissioning activities, ensuring availability and proper inventory management.
    • Track expenditures related to commissioning activities, including labor costs, equipment, and materials, and provide recommendations for cost-saving initiatives where possible.
  7. Continuous Improvement and Process Development:

    • Drive continuous improvement initiatives for commissioning processes, identifying opportunities to streamline workflows, improve system performance, and reduce costs.
    • Stay up-to-date with the latest industry trends, new technologies, and best practices in electrical commissioning, integrating these innovations into the commissioning process.
    • Lead the development and implementation of new commissioning standards, procedures, and tools to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
  8. Safety and Risk Management:

    • Ensure that all commissioning work is performed safely and complies with all relevant health and safety regulations.
    • Lead the identification and mitigation of risks during the commissioning process, ensuring that all electrical systems are tested safely and that personnel follow established safety protocols.
    • Conduct safety training for commissioning team members and other involved stakeholders to reinforce safe work practices and minimize risks.

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • In-depth knowledge of electrical systems, power distribution, control systems, transformers, protection systems, and instrumentation.
  • Strong experience in commissioning electrical systems and equipment, including testing, troubleshooting, and system integration.
  • Expertise in managing large-scale electrical commissioning projects, ensuring they are completed on time, within budget, and in accordance with safety and performance standards.
  • Extensive knowledge of electrical safety standards, codes (e.g., NEC, IEC), and regulatory requirements (e.g., OSHA).
  • Strong project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, allocate resources effectively, and maintain a focus on safety and quality.
  • Excellent leadership and team management skills, with the ability to motivate and guide a team of engineers and technicians.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact with clients, contractors, project teams, and stakeholders.
  • Problem-solving and decision-making skills, with the ability to resolve complex issues efficiently.

Educational Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Certifications in electrical commissioning, project management, or control systems (e.g., Six Sigma, PMP, PLC, SCADA) are a plus.
  • Additional certifications in safety standards (e.g., OSHA, NEC) are beneficial.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Electrical Systems Design and Optimization

  • Overseeing the design, implementation, and optimization of electrical control and monitoring systems.
  • Power Distribution Systems Management

  • Leading the commissioning and maintenance of complex power distribution networks, including load flow analysis and protection schemes.
  • SCADA and PLC System Leadership

  • Designing, programming, and managing SCADA and PLC systems, including integration with enterprise systems.
  • Electrical Safety Standards and Compliance Oversight

  • Ensuring organizational adherence to IEC, NEC, and other relevant standards, and leading safety audits.

Experience:

  • 8+ years of experience in electrical commissioning, with at least 3-5 years in a managerial or leadership role.
  • Proven experience in leading and managing commissioning teams for large-scale electrical projects, including power systems, industrial automation, and electrical control systems.
  • Extensive hands-on experience in electrical system testing, troubleshooting, and performance optimization.
  • Experience with managing budgets, schedules, and resources for commissioning projects.

Tools and Technologies:

  • Proficiency with electrical testing and diagnostic tools such as multimeters, insulation testers, oscilloscopes, and power analyzers.
  • Familiarity with commissioning and control systems software (e.g., SCADA, PLC configuration tools).
  • Experience with project management software (e.g., MS Project, Primavera) to track and manage project timelines and resources.
  • Knowledge of energy management tools and calibration techniques.
