The Director of Transport and Rigging – Heavy Lift Logistics for Turbines is responsible for planning, executing, and overseeing the safe and efficient movement, lifting, and installation of large turbine components (gas, steam), generators, compressors, and associated heavy equipment. This role leads all aspects of domestic and international heavy haul logistics, multimodal transport, rigging operations, and subcontractor coordination, ensuring compliance with technical specifications, safety standards, and project schedules.
Lead the development and execution of logistics plans for the transport and rigging of turbines, generators, gearboxes, and auxiliary equipment.
Evaluate route surveys, transport feasibility, load studies, and crane/lift plans for capital project sites.
Manage end-to-end transportation using road, rail, barge, and ocean freight for oversized and over-dimensional components.
Ensure compliance with local/international regulations, customs requirements, and permitting processes for heavy lift shipments.
Lead planning and execution of rigging operations, including selection of cranes, gantries, SPMTs, and lifting gear.
Oversee on-site offloading, positioning, and installation of turbines and high-value rotating equipment with precision and safety.
Select, negotiate, and manage heavy haul, rigging, and transport subcontractors, ensuring performance, safety, and budget compliance.
Conduct technical reviews and approve method statements, lifting plans, and risk assessments submitted by vendors.
Enforce strict adherence to HSE standards and heavy lift safety protocols (LOLER, OSHA, ASME B30, etc.).
Identify and mitigate transport and rigging risks including structural loads, site access, weather, and terrain constraints.
Coordinate logistics interfaces with engineering, project management, site construction, and OEMs to ensure timely delivery and handling.
Maintain accurate tracking, documentation, and cost control for all transport and rigging activities.
Heavy transport and rigging of large industrial equipment (turbines, generators, compressors)
Multimodal logistics planning and execution (SPMTs, barges, ships, railcars, cranes)
Capital project and infrastructure support (power plants, refineries, LNG terminals)
Compliance with lifting codes, local transport regulations, and customs procedures
Education: Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Logistics, or related field (Master’s preferred)
Experience: 15+ years in heavy lift logistics or industrial transport, with at least 8 years handling turbine-class equipment or similar over-dimensional cargo
Technical Expertise:
Deep knowledge of lifting/rigging equipment and engineering principles
Familiarity with route engineering, lifting simulations, CAD lift planning, and SPMT operations
Systems & Tools:
Proficiency in logistics planning tools, CAD, Primavera/MS Project, and GPS tracking systems
Familiar with Incoterms, HS codes, and shipping documentation
Certified Rigger or Lift Director (NCCCO or equivalent)
PMP or equivalent project management certification
HSE certification (IOSH/NEBOSH) preferred for field oversight
