Director of Spares Management – Critical Rotating Equipment Parts

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Director of Spares Management – Critical Rotating Equipment Parts is responsible for the strategic planning, sourcing, lifecycle tracking, and inventory optimization of spare parts for essential rotating equipment—including gas turbines, steam turbines, compressors, and generators. The role ensures availability, reliability, and cost-effective management of spare parts to support uptime, maintenance, and operational efficiency across multiple facilities or projects.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Spares Strategy & Lifecycle Planning

  • Develop and implement spares management strategies aligned with OEM recommendations, maintenance schedules, and plant reliability goals.

  • Create and maintain Bill of Materials (BoM), criticality rankings, and part replacement cycles for rotating assets.

2. Inventory Optimization & Availability

  • Establish minimum/maximum stock levels, reorder points, and lead times for critical components.

  • Utilize data-driven tools (e.g., CMMS, ERP, MRP) to optimize inventory and avoid stockouts or overstocking.

  • Lead critical spares reviews during project commissioning and handover phases.

3. Supplier and OEM Management

  • Build strong relationships with OEMs (GE, Siemens, Mitsubishi, Solar, etc.) and aftermarket service providers.

  • Manage procurement of long-lead and obsolete spares, including reverse engineering or alternative sourcing when required.

  • Negotiate long-term agreements, framework contracts, and warranty-backed supply deals.

4. Reliability & Risk Mitigation

  • Coordinate with reliability, maintenance, and operations teams to ensure spare part readiness for planned shutdowns, overhauls, and emergency repairs.

  • Identify high-risk components and develop mitigation plans including stocking strategies or vendor-managed inventory (VMI).

  • Conduct root cause analysis for repeat part failures and adjust spares strategy accordingly.

5. Digital Tools, Analytics & Governance

  • Implement spares tracking, forecasting, and usage analytics using modern CMMS/ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Maximo, Oracle).

  • Establish governance and data accuracy protocols for spare part master data, codification, and classification (UNSPSC/ISO 8000).

6. Team Leadership & Collaboration

  • Lead a cross-functional team of planners, analysts, warehouse leads, and procurement specialists.

  • Collaborate with maintenance, operations, engineering, and finance stakeholders to align spare part strategy with asset health and budgetary goals.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Critical spare parts for high-value rotating equipment (turbines, compressors, pumps, gearboxes)

  • Lifecycle spare parts planning (commissioning, operation, overhaul, retirement)

  • Long-lead/obsolete parts sourcing and risk-based inventory management

  • Support for brownfield and greenfield projects

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Supply Chain Management, or equivalent (MBA or MS preferred)

  • Experience: 12+ years in spares or asset management, with at least 5 years focused on rotating equipment in heavy industry or energy sectors

  • Technical Knowledge:

    • Deep understanding of rotating equipment assemblies and part nomenclature

    • Familiarity with OEM spare part catalogs and maintenance strategies (e.g., RCM, CBM)

  • Systems & Tools:

    • Proficiency in SAP PM/MM, Maximo, Oracle EAM, or similar platforms

    • Strong Excel/Power BI or analytics tools for inventory management

Preferred Certifications:

  • CMRP (Certified Maintenance & Reliability Professional)

  • CPSM (Certified Professional in Supply Management)

  • APICS CPIM or CSCP
