Job Title: Dimensional Calibration Engineer

Job Summary:

The Dimensional Calibration Engineer Manager is responsible for overseeing the calibration of dimensional measurement systems and ensuring the accuracy of measurement equipment used in manufacturing, quality control, and product testing. This role involves leading a team of engineers and technicians, managing calibration processes, ensuring compliance with industry standards, and driving improvements in the accuracy, efficiency, and reliability of dimensional measurement systems. The manager will ensure that all calibration activities meet regulatory requirements and organizational quality standards, and will be responsible for resource allocation, project management, and continuous process improvements.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Leadership and Team Management:

    • Lead, mentor, and manage a team of dimensional calibration engineers and technicians, providing guidance, training, and career development opportunities.
    • Set clear objectives and expectations for the team, track performance, and conduct performance reviews to ensure the team meets departmental goals and operational objectives.
    • Foster a collaborative and results-driven environment that encourages continuous learning, problem-solving, and innovation.
  2. Dimensional Calibration System Oversight:

    • Oversee the setup, calibration, and maintenance of dimensional measurement equipment, including coordinate measuring machines (CMM), laser scanners, micrometers, calipers, and other precision measurement tools.
    • Ensure all dimensional calibration activities comply with industry standards and regulations, such as ISO 17025, ISO 9001, and other relevant quality standards.
    • Develop, implement, and optimize calibration procedures for measuring instruments to ensure accuracy and reliability in production and testing environments.
  3. Regulatory Compliance and Quality Assurance:

    • Ensure that all dimensional calibration procedures comply with international and local regulatory requirements (e.g., ISO 17025, NIST traceability).
    • Lead efforts to maintain and improve compliance with audits and inspections related to dimensional calibration systems and activities.
    • Oversee the preparation and maintenance of calibration certificates, reports, and records, ensuring documentation is accurate and complete for internal and external audits.
  4. Process Improvement and Optimization:

    • Identify and implement opportunities to improve calibration processes, optimize workflows, and reduce downtime while maintaining high levels of precision and accuracy.
    • Drive continuous improvement initiatives within the dimensional calibration process, implementing new technologies, methodologies, and best practices.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineering, production, and quality control, to improve measurement accuracy and product quality.
  5. Project Management and Execution:

    • Manage calibration-related projects, including system installations, upgrades, and improvements, ensuring they are completed on time, within budget, and meet the required specifications.
    • Develop project plans, manage resources, and track project progress to ensure milestones and objectives are achieved.
    • Coordinate calibration activities across various departments, ensuring minimal impact on production and operational schedules.
  6. Troubleshooting and Technical Support:

    • Lead troubleshooting efforts for complex dimensional measurement and calibration issues, providing technical support to other teams and resolving problems in a timely manner.
    • Oversee the maintenance and repair of measurement equipment, ensuring that all tools are functioning optimally.
    • Provide expert guidance on dimensional measurement techniques and calibration issues for internal stakeholders.
  7. Data Management and Reporting:

    • Oversee data collection from calibration activities, ensuring the accuracy of measurement results and the proper use of calibration tools.
    • Manage data analysis and generate reports on calibration results, equipment performance, and process improvements.
    • Present technical findings and recommendations to senior management to support decision-making and operational improvements.
  8. Collaboration with Cross-Functional Teams:

    • Work closely with the manufacturing, quality control, and R&D teams to ensure that dimensional calibration systems meet operational requirements and support product quality.
    • Serve as the primary point of contact for all dimensional calibration-related issues and ensure that any quality-related concerns are addressed promptly.
    • Collaborate with suppliers and vendors to select and implement new calibration equipment and technologies that improve efficiency and accuracy.
  9. Budget and Resource Management:

    • Develop and manage the budget for dimensional calibration activities, ensuring the efficient use of resources, equipment, and personnel.
    • Monitor expenses and ensure that calibration-related costs are kept within budgetary constraints while achieving high operational standards.
    • Oversee the procurement of new calibration tools and equipment, ensuring they meet the needs of the organization and regulatory requirements.

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • Extensive knowledge of dimensional calibration systems, measurement tools, and precision measurement techniques (e.g., CMM, micrometers, calipers, laser scanners).
  • Strong understanding of regulatory compliance, including ISO 17025, NIST traceability, and other relevant quality standards.
  • Expertise in calibration process design, system optimization, and troubleshooting techniques for dimensional measurement systems.
  • Proven ability to manage projects, timelines, and resources effectively, ensuring successful implementation of calibration activities and system improvements.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills, with the ability to manage teams and collaborate with cross-functional departments.
  • In-depth understanding of quality assurance processes, including root cause analysis, corrective and preventive actions (CAPA), and process optimization.

Educational Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Certifications related to dimensional calibration, quality management systems, or regulatory compliance (e.g., Six Sigma, ISO 17025) are highly desirable.

Key Focus Areas for Manager-Level Dimensional Calibration Engineer:

  • Avionics and Flight Control Systems: Managing the strategic development and implementation of dimensional calibration systems for avionics and flight control systems, ensuring their alignment with organizational goals and the highest standards of accuracy, efficiency, and safety.
  • Safety and Emergency Systems for Aircraft: Overseeing the calibration and validation of dimensional measurement systems for safety and emergency systems, ensuring full regulatory compliance and reliable system performance during critical flight operations.
  • Precision Instrumentation for Navigation, Communications, and Control: Leading the design and integration of precision dimensional measurement systems for navigation, communication, and control, ensuring system reliability, accuracy, and optimal functionality across all platforms.

Experience:

  • 7+ years of experience in dimensional calibration, measurement systems, or related fields, with at least 3 years in a leadership or managerial role.
  • Proven experience in managing calibration systems, implementing improvements, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Hands-on experience with a wide variety of dimensional measurement tools, systems, and calibration processes in manufacturing or quality control settings.

Tools and Technologies:

  • Expertise with dimensional measurement equipment such as CMM, laser scanners, micrometers, calipers, and optical measurement systems.
  • Familiarity with calibration software, quality management systems (QMS), and data analysis tools (e.g., Minitab, Excel) for performance monitoring and reporting.
  • Knowledge of statistical tools and techniques (e.g., SPC, Gage R&R) to assess measurement system accuracy and precision.

Other Requirements:

  • Strong leadership, mentoring, and team management skills to lead and develop a team of engineers and technicians.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects, balancing technical tasks with managerial responsibilities.
  • A commitment to continuous improvement, operational excellence, and maintaining high standards of precision in dimensional calibration.
  • Willingness to travel to different facilities or sites as needed for calibration system installations, audits, and troubleshooting.
