DAQ/Telemetry Systems Engineer

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Mid-Level DAQ/Telemetry Systems Engineer is responsible for designing, integrating, and maintaining data acquisition and telemetry systems used in aerospace testing, including flight tests, propulsion tests, and structural evaluations. This role involves working with sensors, DAQ hardware/software, signal conditioning modules, and telemetry links to ensure accurate and reliable data collection in dynamic environments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • System Design & Integration:
Design and implement DAQ and telemetry systems tailored to specific test requirements, including selection of sensors, wiring schemes, and hardware architecture.

  • Test Support & Setup:
Plan and lead the setup of instrumentation and telemetry systems for test campaigns. Ensure proper signal routing, grounding, and interference mitigation.

  • Sensor & Channel Configuration:
Configure sensor channels and telemetry paths using software such as NI LabVIEW, Dewesoft, IADS, or custom in-house systems.

  • Data Quality Assurance:
Validate and troubleshoot data integrity issues, perform calibration checks, and apply filters or correction factors as needed.

  • Telemetry System Management:
Configure RF telemetry systems, antennas, and receivers. Monitor link performance during high-speed or long-range test operations.

  • Real-Time Monitoring:
Support real-time data visualization and diagnostics during testing. Adjust system parameters as needed for optimal performance.

  • Collaboration:
Work closely with test engineers, flight test teams, and mechanical/electrical technicians to ensure data collection objectives are met.

  • Documentation & Reporting:
Generate detailed system diagrams, test configurations, and post-test data summaries for internal review and archival.

Key Focus Areas:

  1. Advanced DAQ System Configuration:
Build and maintain complex multi-channel DAQ systems involving analog, digital, thermocouple, strain gauge, and accelerometer inputs.

  2. Telemetry System Optimization:
Ensure telemetry system bandwidth, range, and reliability meet requirements for flight and engine testing environments.

  3. Signal Integrity & Noise Reduction:
Apply best practices for grounding, shielding, and cable routing to reduce EMI and signal degradation in high-noise environments.

  4. Cross-Disciplinary Engineering Support:
Serve as a key interface between instrumentation, software, electrical, and mechanical teams during test integration and execution.

  5. Test Automation & Data Analysis Tools:
Develop scripts or tools (e.g., Python, MATLAB) to automate data processing, sensor health checks, or real-time alert systems.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related technical field

  • 3–7 years of experience in data acquisition, telemetry, or instrumentation engineering

  • Hands-on experience with DAQ systems such as NI, Dewesoft, HBM, or similar

  • Familiarity with telemetry protocols, frequency planning, RF systems, and real-time data processing

  • Proficiency in software tools like LabVIEW, MATLAB, IADS, or Python scripting

  • Strong troubleshooting, documentation, and organizational skills

  • Ability to work in fast-paced, high-stakes test environments including flight lines, labs, or test cells

  • U.S. citizenship or clearance eligibility may be required (for defense-related programs)
