Job Title: Control Systems Technician (Offshore Platforms)

Job Summary:

The Control Systems Technician (Offshore Platforms) is responsible for supporting the installation, maintenance, and calibration of control systems used in offshore oil and gas platforms. The role involves assisting senior technicians with system diagnostics, monitoring equipment performance, and ensuring compliance with safety protocols. As a fresher, the individual will gain hands-on experience under supervision while developing foundational skills in control systems technology.

Key Responsibilities:

System Installation and Support:

  • Assist in the installation and setup of control systems, including Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Distributed Control Systems (DCS), and SCADA.
  • Support the wiring and integration of control devices such as sensors, actuators, and transmitters.
  • Participate in initial system testing and validation activities under the guidance of senior technicians.

Monitoring and Maintenance:

  • Monitor the performance of control systems to ensure they operate within specified parameters.
  • Assist in performing routine maintenance tasks, including calibration and cleaning of sensors and control devices.
  • Identify and report any anomalies or system malfunctions to the supervising technician.

Troubleshooting:

  • Learn to diagnose basic issues in control systems using diagnostic tools and software.
  • Document troubleshooting steps and findings for review by senior team members.
  • Support the resolution of minor technical issues under supervision.

Safety and Compliance:

  • Follow organizational safety standards and offshore protocols while performing tasks.
  • Participate in safety drills and training sessions to gain familiarity with emergency procedures.
  • Ensure the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and adherence to safety regulations.

Learning and Development:

  • Attend training sessions and workshops to build knowledge of control systems technology and offshore operations.
  • Gain exposure to industry standards such as IEC, API, and safety certifications like NEBOSH or OSHA.
  • Develop technical skills through hands-on experience with control systems and associated software.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate logs of system performance, maintenance activities, and calibration data.
  • Assist in preparing basic reports for review by senior staff.
  • Contribute to the development of standard operating procedures for routine tasks.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Control Systems Setup: Assist in the installation and initial configuration of control systems on offshore platforms.
  • Maintenance and Monitoring: Perform basic maintenance and support real-time system monitoring.
  • Safety Practices: Follow offshore safety protocols and contribute to maintaining a safe work environment.
  • Skill Development: Build foundational knowledge and skills in control systems technology.

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • Basic understanding of control systems such as PLCs, DCS, and SCADA.
  • Familiarity with sensors, actuators, and communication protocols like Modbus or HART is advantageous.
  • Awareness of offshore safety standards and the importance of compliance.
  • Analytical skills to monitor and identify potential system issues.
  • Strong communication skills to collaborate effectively with team members.

Educational Qualifications:

  • Diploma or Associate’s degree in Instrumentation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Basic certifications in control systems or safety (e.g., OSHA, NEBOSH) are advantageous but not mandatory.

Experience:

  • No prior experience required; internships or academic projects related to control systems are beneficial.

Tools and Technologies:

  • Exposure to basic diagnostic tools like multimeters and calibration devices.
  • Familiarity with SCADA/DCS software and basic programming concepts is a plus.
  • Knowledge of offshore tools and equipment used in control system installations is beneficial.
