Job Title: Control Room Engineer (Power Plant)

Job Summary:

The Mid-Level Control Room Engineer is responsible for independently managing and optimizing the operation of power plant systems from the control room. This role involves monitoring SCADA and Distributed Control Systems (DCS), troubleshooting complex issues, coordinating with field teams, and contributing to system upgrades and performance improvements. The engineer ensures plant efficiency, reliability, and compliance with safety and regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities:

System Monitoring and Operation:

  • Operate, monitor, and optimize power plant systems, including turbines, generators, boilers, and auxiliary equipment, using SCADA and DCS platforms.
  • Analyze alarms, trends, and system performance data to identify inefficiencies or potential issues.
  • Execute advanced operational commands to adjust system parameters for optimal performance.

Troubleshooting and Maintenance Coordination:

  • Diagnose and resolve complex issues in plant systems, minimizing downtime and operational disruptions.
  • Collaborate with maintenance teams to address equipment malfunctions and perform system testing.
  • Support root cause analysis for recurring issues and implement corrective actions.

Data Analysis and Reporting:

  • Prepare detailed reports on plant performance metrics, system anomalies, and operational adjustments.
  • Analyze historical data to identify trends and recommend improvements to enhance plant efficiency.
  • Contribute to developing advanced Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for control room operations.

Compliance and Safety:

  • Ensure compliance with industry standards, safety protocols, and regulatory requirements in all control room activities.
  • Conduct risk assessments and implement mitigation strategies for control room operations.
  • Oversee the validation and testing of safety-critical systems, including emergency shutdown mechanisms.

Collaboration and Leadership:

  • Work closely with field teams, maintenance personnel, and safety officers to ensure seamless operations and adherence to plant objectives.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and technicians.
  • Participate in cross-functional team discussions to propose and implement system improvements.

Project Support:

  • Assist in planning and executing system upgrades, retrofits, and commissioning activities.
  • Manage medium-scale projects related to control system enhancements or process optimization.

Key Focus Areas:

  • System Optimization: Independently monitor and adjust SCADA/DCS platforms for efficient plant operations.
  • Advanced Troubleshooting: Resolve complex system issues and contribute to long-term reliability.
  • Compliance: Maintain adherence to safety and regulatory standards in all control room activities.
  • Leadership: Mentor junior team members and coordinate with cross-functional teams for smooth operations.

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • Advanced understanding of power plant processes and control systems, including SCADA and DCS platforms.
  • Proficiency in interpreting system alarms, trends, and performance data for decision-making.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills to resolve technical issues.
  • Knowledge of industry standards, safety regulations, and best practices for control room operations.
  • Effective communication skills for collaborating with teams and preparing detailed reports.

Educational Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Advanced certifications in SCADA/DCS systems (e.g., Siemens, ABB, Honeywell) are desirable.

Experience:

  • 3-5 years of experience in power plant operations, control systems, or related roles.
  • Proven ability to manage SCADA/DCS operations independently and contribute to system optimization.

Tools and Technologies:

  • Proficiency with SCADA/DCS platforms like Siemens WinCC, ABB, Honeywell Experion, or equivalent.
  • Familiarity with advanced diagnostic tools such as oscilloscopes, vibration analyzers, and thermal cameras.
  • Experience with performance monitoring and analytics tools for optimizing plant operations.

  • Strong leadership and teamwork skills to manage coordination between control room and field teams.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple responsibilities efficiently.
  • Willingness to work in a shift-based schedule, including nights and weekends.
