Boiler Supervisor (Oil and Gas)

Roles & Responsibilities

The Senior Boiler Supervisor is responsible for leading and managing the safe, efficient, and compliant operation and maintenance of industrial boiler systems in oil and gas production or processing facilities. The role requires strong technical leadership, regulatory knowledge, and experience managing teams and optimizing utility performance.


Key Responsibilities:

  1. Strategic Boiler Operations Management:

    • Oversee the operation of high-pressure boilers, economizers, feedwater systems, and steam distribution networks.

    • Ensure efficient startup, continuous operation, and safe shutdown of boiler units in accordance with SOPs.

    • Optimize steam generation performance through real-time monitoring and control systems (DCS/PLC).

  2. Team Leadership & Development:

    • Lead and manage a team of boiler operators, technicians, and junior supervisors.

    • Plan shift rotations, assign tasks, and monitor performance.

    • Provide technical mentorship, training, and competency development programs.

  3. Maintenance & Reliability Management:

    • Develop and implement preventive and predictive maintenance schedules.

    • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation teams to ensure reliability and reduce downtime.

    • Conduct root cause analysis (RCA) for major failures and implement corrective actions.

  4. Regulatory Compliance & Safety:

    • Ensure full compliance with IBR, ASME, OSHA, and local statutory guidelines.

    • Prepare for internal and external audits and inspections (including boiler board certifications).

    • Conduct regular safety drills, risk assessments, and enforce safe work practices.

  5. Performance Monitoring & Reporting:

    • Monitor KPIs such as fuel efficiency, steam-to-fuel ratio, emissions, boiler blowdown rates, etc.

    • Prepare detailed reports for management on boiler performance, maintenance trends, and operational risks.

    • Support energy efficiency and sustainability initiatives.

  6. Project & Upgrade Management:

    • Participate in planning and execution of boiler system upgrades, retrofits, or new installations.

    • Review technical specifications and liaise with vendors or OEMs as needed.

  • Operational Excellence: Maintain optimal boiler performance under varying load and fuel conditions.

  • Downtime Reduction: Ensure high availability and reliability of boiler systems.

  • Safety Culture: Build and sustain a zero-incident safety culture.

  • Continuous Improvement: Implement industry best practices and performance improvement initiatives.


Required Skills & Competencies:

Technical Expertise:

  • Deep understanding of steam generation systems, pressure vessels, burner management systems, condensate recovery, and water treatment.

  • Expertise in SCADA/DCS systems and instrumentation controls.

  • Knowledge of emission control technologies and environmental standards.

Leadership & Planning:

  • Proven ability to lead multi-skilled teams in 24/7 industrial environments.

  • Strong planning, task delegation, and time management capabilities.

Problem Solving & Decision Making:

  • High-level troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills.

  • Ability to make quick, safe, and effective decisions during emergencies or process deviations.

Regulatory & Documentation:

  • Strong familiarity with IBR certifications, boiler inspection cycles, permit renewals, and statutory filings.

  • Experience in preparing technical reports, audit documentation, and compliance checklists.

Communication & Coordination:

  • Clear communication skills for effective coordination with engineering, production, and safety departments.

  • Ability to present findings, performance updates, and proposals to senior management.


Qualifications & Experience:

  • Education: Degree / Diploma in Mechanical, Power, or Thermal Engineering.

  • Certification: First Class Boiler Attendant Certificate (Mandatory).

  • Experience: 8–12 years of experience in boiler operations in the oil & gas, petrochemical, or large process industries, with at least 3–5 years in a supervisory/leadership role.
