Job Title: Boiler Mechanical Fitter

Job Summary:

The Mid-Level Boiler Mechanical Fitter is responsible for overseeing the installation, maintenance, and repair of boiler systems and associated mechanical components in industrial, commercial, or manufacturing environments. This role requires hands-on expertise in mechanical fitting, troubleshooting, and system integration. The Boiler Mechanical Fitter will lead and assist in the installation and servicing of boilers, ensuring that all systems are functional, efficient, and comply with industry safety standards and regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Boiler Installation and Setup:

    • Lead the installation of boiler systems, including mounting, alignment, and connecting components such as pumps, valves, and pressure relief systems.
    • Supervise and guide junior fitters and assistants in the installation and assembly of mechanical parts of the boiler systems.
    • Ensure correct setup and alignment of boiler components according to technical specifications and safety guidelines.
  2. Routine Maintenance and Repairs:

    • Perform routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on boilers and associated systems to ensure optimal performance.
    • Identify and rectify mechanical issues, such as leaks, pressure problems, and malfunctions in components such as pumps, valves, and regulators.
    • Oversee the repair or replacement of parts like gaskets, seals, and valves to maintain efficient boiler operation.
  3. Boiler System Upgrades:

    • Lead the upgrade or modification of existing boiler systems, ensuring that all new components are integrated correctly and meet operational requirements.
    • Implement improvements for energy efficiency, reliability, and safety of the system as needed.
    • Ensure all system updates comply with the latest industry standards and regulations.
  4. Team Leadership and Coordination:

    • Supervise and coordinate the activities of junior fitters, guiding them in completing tasks safely and according to engineering specifications.
    • Assign and prioritize tasks within the fitting team to ensure project deadlines are met.
    • Provide training and mentorship to less experienced staff, fostering professional development and adherence to safety practices.
  5. Safety and Compliance:

    • Ensure that all fitting activities comply with health and safety regulations, industry standards, and company policies (e.g., ASME, API, OSHA).
    • Conduct safety checks on equipment, tools, and materials before use, ensuring that all installations and maintenance meet safety criteria.
    • Monitor and enforce the use of proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to safe work practices at all times.
  6. Testing and Performance Monitoring:

    • Conduct pressure tests, leak tests, and system performance checks to verify that boilers and components are operating within prescribed specifications.
    • Lead troubleshooting and diagnostics when system performance is not meeting standards, and take corrective actions where necessary.
    • Ensure boilers are tested for efficiency, including checking fuel consumption and heat exchange processes.
  7. Documentation and Reporting:

    • Maintain detailed records of installation activities, maintenance schedules, repairs, and system upgrades.
    • Create and update technical reports, including system performance evaluations, repair work, and inventory management.
    • Provide regular updates on work progress, project timelines, and any challenges to project managers or senior engineers.
  8. Collaboration with Other Teams:

    • Work closely with project engineers, maintenance teams, and other departments to ensure that boiler installations and repairs are completed efficiently.
    • Collaborate with procurement teams to ensure the correct parts and materials are available for ongoing and upcoming boiler system installations and repairs.
    • Coordinate with other technical teams to integrate boilers with other systems (e.g., HVAC, control systems).
  9. Continuous Improvement:

    • Stay up to date with advancements in boiler technology, mechanical fitting techniques, and industry regulations to continually improve installation and maintenance practices.
    • Contribute to the development of new processes and practices that improve the efficiency and safety of boiler systems.

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • Strong knowledge of boiler systems, mechanical components, and associated mechanical systems (e.g., pumps, valves, piping).
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting technical drawings, blueprints, and manuals related to boiler installation and maintenance.
  • Expertise in mechanical fitting, pipe fabrication, welding, and system alignment.
  • Ability to use hand tools, power tools, and specialized equipment (e.g., torque wrenches, alignment tools).
  • Strong understanding of industry codes, standards, and regulations (e.g., ASME, API, NEC, OSHA) regarding boiler systems.
  • Ability to troubleshoot mechanical issues effectively and implement appropriate solutions quickly.
  • Good communication skills, with the ability to report issues and progress clearly to management and clients.
  • Leadership skills, with the ability to guide and supervise junior fitters and technicians.

Key Focus Areas:

Field Instrumentation: Assist in maintaining and calibrating field devices for accurate process control.

Troubleshooting: Learn basic fault diagnosis and support the resolution of issues in instrumentation systems.

Safety Compliance: Follow safety protocols and participate in training programs to ensure workplace safety.

Skill Development: Gain technical knowledge and experience in oil and gas field operations.

Educational Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (minimum requirement); vocational or technical certifications in mechanical fitting, boiler installation, or industrial maintenance preferred.
  • Certifications in welding, pipe fitting, or related mechanical disciplines are advantageous.

Experience:

  • 3-5 years of hands-on experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of boiler systems or related mechanical systems.
  • Previous experience in supervising a team or providing guidance to junior fitters is preferred.
  • Familiarity with industry standards, safety practices, and regulatory codes governing boiler systems.

Tools and Technologies:

  • Proficiency in hand tools, power tools, and mechanical systems (e.g., wrenches, pipe benders, welding equipment).
  • Experience with testing equipment for boilers, including pressure gauges, thermometers, and flow meters.
  • Familiarity with mechanical alignment tools, such as laser alignment equipment and leveling devices.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to work in physically demanding environments and lift heavy equipment when required.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to diagnose and resolve mechanical and operational issues.
  • Willingness to travel to job sites, work in various environments, and occasionally work overtime to meet project deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team, depending on project needs.
