The Junior Boiler Fitter assists in the installation, assembly, maintenance, and repair of marine boiler systems and associated piping aboard ships and in dry-dock facilities. Working under the supervision of experienced boiler mechanics or marine engineers, this entry-level role involves performing mechanical tasks related to steam system hardware, including drums, tubes, valves, and supports. The Junior Fitter learns to use precision tools, interpret technical drawings, and adhere to marine safety standards during boiler servicing and overhauls.
Assist in the assembly and installation of marine boilers, burner systems, and pressure components
Support maintenance activities such as tube removal/replacement, gasket fitting, burner servicing, and valve overhauls
Learn to interpret blueprints, layout drawings, and piping isometrics relevant to boiler systems
Use basic tools (wrenches, torque tools, pipe cutters, grinders) for fitting and mechanical alignment
Help prepare boiler parts and surfaces for welding, testing, or inspection (e.g., cleaning tube sheets, descaling, applying anti-seize)
Follow procedures for bolt torqueing, flange alignment, and piping connection
Observe and assist during hydrostatic testing, pressure checks, and leak tests under supervision
Maintain a clean and organized work area in accordance with marine safety and environmental protocols
Learn to identify common mechanical faults (e.g., gasket failure, tube leakage, misalignment)
Support senior fitters or welders with material handling, equipment setup, and maintenance record-keeping
Mechanical assembly and maintenance of boiler components
On-the-job training in marine boiler repair techniques
Adherence to safety protocols in confined spaces and hot work zones
Learning industry tools and mechanical standards for pressure systems
Education:
High school diploma or technical trade certificate (preferred fields: Mechanical Fitting, Marine Engineering, or Welding)
Completion of apprenticeship or marine boiler maintenance training (in progress or recent graduate)
Experience:
0–2 years of mechanical experience in shipyards, boiler shops, or heavy machinery (internships or technical training considered)
Technical Skills:
Basic knowledge of mechanical assembly tools and safety practices
Familiarity with marine or industrial piping and boiler components (e.g., steam drums, nozzles, manholes)
Ability to follow instructions, read basic mechanical drawings, and handle hand tools confidently
Soft Skills:
Good work ethic, reliability, and willingness to learn on the job
Physically fit for confined space work, manual lifting, and long hours in marine environments
Team player with a safety-first mindset
Attention to detail and readiness to take on entry-level technical responsibilities
