Job Title: Biomedical Equipment Technician

Job Summary:

The Mid-Level Biomedical Equipment Technician (BMET) is responsible for managing the maintenance, repair, and calibration of a wide range of medical equipment. This role involves handling more complex technical challenges, supervising junior technicians, and ensuring adherence to regulatory standards. The technician collaborates with clinical teams to optimize equipment performance and contributes to process improvements and operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities:

Equipment Maintenance and Repair:

  • Perform advanced maintenance, calibration, and repair tasks on medical equipment, such as imaging systems, diagnostic devices, and life-support systems.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex technical issues, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of medical devices.
  • Maintain and update service logs, repair histories, and calibration records for compliance and operational tracking.

Preventive Maintenance:

  • Develop and oversee preventive maintenance schedules to ensure equipment reliability and minimize downtime.
  • Inspect and test high-complexity devices, ensuring compliance with manufacturer specifications and safety standards.
  • Recommend part replacements or upgrades to improve equipment performance and longevity.

Troubleshooting and Diagnostics:

  • Conduct root cause analysis for recurring equipment issues and implement corrective measures.
  • Utilize advanced diagnostic tools and methodologies to identify and resolve system malfunctions.
  • Collaborate with manufacturers, vendors, and senior engineers for support on critical repairs.

Regulatory Compliance and Quality Assurance:

  • Ensure all maintenance activities comply with standards such as ISO 13485, IEC 60601, and FDA requirements.
  • Prepare for and participate in internal and external audits, maintaining compliance documentation and certifications.
  • Develop and enforce standard operating procedures (SOPs) for equipment maintenance and repair.

Team Supervision and Training:

  • Mentor junior technicians, providing technical guidance and hands-on training to enhance their skills.
  • Delegate tasks and oversee the work of junior team members to ensure quality and adherence to protocols.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and identify areas for development within the team.

Process Improvement and Innovation:

  • Identify and propose opportunities to improve maintenance workflows and operational efficiency.
  • Research and recommend emerging technologies and tools to enhance equipment reliability.
  • Lead initiatives to implement predictive maintenance strategies and automation technologies.

Collaboration and Support:

  • Work closely with clinical staff to address equipment-related concerns and optimize operational workflows.
  • Provide technical support during the deployment of new equipment or system upgrades.
  • Serve as a liaison between healthcare teams and vendors for resolving complex equipment issues.

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • Advanced understanding of medical devices, including imaging systems, diagnostic tools, and life-support equipment.
  • Proficiency with diagnostic tools, such as multimeters, signal simulators, flow analyzers, and electrical safety analyzers.
  • Strong knowledge of regulatory standards, including ISO 13485, IEC 60601, and FDA requirements.
  • Leadership and organizational skills for supervising teams and managing tasks effectively.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills for addressing complex technical challenges.

Educational Qualifications:

  • Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Instrumentation, or a related technical field.
  • Certifications in medical device maintenance, regulatory compliance (e.g., ISO 13485), or advanced calibration techniques are preferred.

Experience:

  • 3-5 years of experience in maintaining, repairing, and calibrating biomedical equipment, with exposure to complex systems.
  • Proven ability to handle advanced troubleshooting and lead technical teams.

Tools and Technologies:

  • Expertise in using advanced diagnostic tools, including oscilloscopes, flow analyzers, and electrical safety testers.
  • Familiarity with maintenance management software and predictive maintenance tools.
  • Knowledge of data analysis tools for tracking equipment performance and reliability.
