Job Title: Biomedical Equipment Technician

Job Summary:

The Junior Biomedical Equipment Technician (BMET) is responsible for performing routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of medical equipment. This role involves independently handling basic technical tasks, collaborating with clinical staff to ensure equipment functionality, and adhering to regulatory compliance. The technician also contributes to preventive maintenance efforts and gains experience with more complex systems under the guidance of senior staff.

Key Responsibilities:

Equipment Maintenance and Repair:

  • Perform routine inspections, preventive maintenance, and minor repairs on biomedical equipment, such as monitors, infusion pumps, and diagnostic devices.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues to ensure the accuracy and reliability of medical equipment.
  • Maintain service logs and update documentation for compliance and tracking purposes.

Preventive Maintenance:

  • Develop and execute preventive maintenance schedules to minimize downtime and enhance equipment performance.
  • Inspect equipment for wear and tear, and report potential risks or malfunctions to senior technicians.
  • Ensure proper calibration of medical devices as per manufacturer and regulatory guidelines.

Troubleshooting and Diagnostics:

  • Diagnose technical issues using basic diagnostic tools, such as multimeters and safety analyzers.
  • Conduct root cause analysis for recurring problems and recommend corrective measures.
  • Collaborate with senior technicians or manufacturers for complex troubleshooting and repairs.

Regulatory Compliance and Safety:

  • Ensure all activities comply with healthcare regulations such as ISO 13485, IEC 60601, and FDA requirements.
  • Follow safety protocols when handling and repairing medical devices in clinical environments.
  • Participate in internal audits and compliance reviews to maintain operational standards.

Collaboration and Support:

  • Work with clinical staff to ensure equipment meets their operational needs and address user concerns.
  • Provide basic training and guidance to end-users for proper handling and functionality of equipment.
  • Assist in managing inventory and tracking spare parts for repairs and maintenance.

Learning and Development:

  • Expand knowledge of biomedical equipment functionality, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Participate in workshops and training programs to improve technical and regulatory expertise.
  • Stay updated on emerging trends and best practices in biomedical equipment management.

  • Equipment Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance and repair tasks to ensure device reliability.
  • Preventive Maintenance: Develop and execute schedules to minimize equipment downtime.
  • Troubleshooting: Independently address minor technical issues and escalate complex problems.

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • Basic to intermediate understanding of biomedical devices and their applications in healthcare.
  • Proficiency in using diagnostic tools such as multimeters, electrical safety analyzers, and calibration equipment.
  • Knowledge of regulatory standards, including ISO 13485 and IEC 60601.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for diagnosing and resolving equipment issues.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills for collaborating with clinical and technical staff.

Educational Qualifications:

  • Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Instrumentation, or a related technical field.
  • Certifications in medical equipment maintenance or safety standards (e.g., ISO 13485 compliance) are preferred.

Experience:

  • 1-2 years of experience in maintaining and repairing biomedical equipment, or equivalent hands-on training.

Tools and Technologies:

  • Proficiency with diagnostic tools, including multimeters, signal simulators, and electrical safety analyzers.
  • Familiarity with maintenance management software and inventory tracking systems.
