Job Title: Biomedical Engineer (Instrumentation)

Job Summary:

The Junior Biomedical Engineer (Instrumentation) is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and calibrating biomedical devices to ensure their reliable operation in healthcare settings. This role involves providing technical support to healthcare professionals, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, and supporting the integration of biomedical instruments. The engineer operates with minimal supervision, gradually building proficiency in advanced biomedical instrumentation systems.

Key Responsibilities:

Device Maintenance and Calibration:

  • Perform routine calibration and preventive maintenance of biomedical instruments such as ventilators, infusion pumps, patient monitors, and imaging devices.
  • Ensure all devices meet performance standards and operate within specified accuracy.
  • Maintain detailed logs and documentation of calibration and maintenance activities for compliance and audits.

Troubleshooting and Diagnostics:

  • Diagnose and resolve minor technical issues in biomedical devices independently.
  • Use diagnostic tools and software to assess device performance and implement corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with senior engineers or vendors to address more complex technical challenges.

Device Integration and Setup:

  • Assist in the installation, configuration, and integration of new biomedical equipment within hospital systems.
  • Validate device performance after installation to ensure seamless functionality.
  • Provide basic technical training to healthcare staff on device operation and features.

Regulatory Compliance and Safety:

  • Ensure all maintenance and operational activities comply with healthcare standards, including FDA, ISO 13485, and IEC 60601.
  • Follow safety protocols during installation, maintenance, and calibration tasks.
  • Support internal audits and inspections by maintaining accurate service records and documentation.

Collaboration and Support:

  • Provide on-site technical support to clinicians, ensuring medical devices meet operational needs.
  • Act as a point of contact for troubleshooting device-related issues during clinical use.
  • Collaborate with vendors to source replacement parts or accessories as needed.

Learning and Development:

  • Enhance knowledge of biomedical instrumentation systems, including control systems, sensors, and actuators.
  • Attend training sessions to stay updated on advancements in biomedical technologies and regulatory standards.
  • Participate in knowledge-sharing sessions with senior engineers to build expertise in troubleshooting and maintenance.

  • Device Maintenance: Perform calibration, troubleshooting, and routine maintenance independently.
  • Device Integration: Support the setup and validation of new biomedical equipment.
  • Compliance and Safety: Adhere to healthcare standards and maintain accurate records for regulatory purposes.
  • Collaboration: Provide technical support and resolve device issues for clinical teams.

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • Proficiency in maintaining and troubleshooting biomedical devices, including patient monitors, infusion pumps, and diagnostic imaging systems.
  • Familiarity with calibration tools such as electrical safety analyzers, signal simulators, and flow meters.
  • Knowledge of healthcare regulations, including FDA, ISO 13485, and IEC 60601 standards.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills for resolving technical challenges.
  • Effective communication skills for collaborating with clinical staff and technical teams.

Educational Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Certifications in biomedical equipment maintenance or regulatory compliance (e.g., ISO 13485) are desirable.

Experience:

  • 1-2 years of experience in maintaining and troubleshooting biomedical devices, preferably in healthcare or related industries.

Tools and Technologies:

  • Familiarity with diagnostic tools and calibration equipment for medical devices.
  • Basic knowledge of software used for device performance logging and compliance tracking.
  • Exposure to advanced systems, such as imaging devices or ventilators, is advantageous.
