Job Title: Automation Systems Engineer (Electrical)

Job Summary:

The Senior Automation Systems Engineer (Electrical) is responsible for leading the design, integration, optimization, and maintenance of complex electrical automation systems. This role requires advanced expertise in PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) programming, SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems, HMI (Human Machine Interface), and industrial automation technologies. The Senior Engineer will lead automation projects, oversee system optimization, troubleshoot advanced issues, and mentor junior engineers. This position involves ensuring that all systems operate efficiently, comply with safety standards, and meet operational goals, while driving innovation and improvement in automation processes.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. System Design and Architecture:

    • Lead the design and development of large-scale, complex electrical control and automation systems, including PLCs, SCADA, HMI, sensors, and actuators.
    • Define control strategies and system architectures, ensuring integration with other systems (e.g., electrical, mechanical, and instrumentation).
    • Develop detailed system specifications, functional designs, and implementation plans that align with client needs and operational requirements.
    • Oversee the creation and review of technical documentation, including wiring diagrams, control system specifications, and system layouts.
  2. PLC Programming and System Integration:

    • Lead the programming, configuration, and optimization of PLCs using industry-standard programming languages (e.g., Ladder Logic, Structured Text, Function Block Diagram).
    • Design and configure SCADA systems to monitor, control, and automate industrial processes.
    • Develop and integrate control systems with various devices and systems, ensuring smooth and reliable communication between PLCs, SCADA, sensors, and machinery.
    • Implement robust and scalable system architectures for automation that can be integrated across various platforms and environments.
  3. Project Leadership and Management:

    • Manage automation projects from design through installation and commissioning, ensuring timely delivery within budget and to client specifications.
    • Develop and maintain detailed project schedules, track milestones, and manage resources to ensure project deadlines are met.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (e.g., electrical, mechanical, software engineers) to ensure the seamless integration of systems.
    • Coordinate with clients and stakeholders to understand requirements and deliver solutions that meet operational and business goals.
  4. Optimization and Performance Tuning:

    • Lead the continuous optimization of automation systems to improve efficiency, reliability, and throughput.
    • Monitor system performance, identify areas for improvement, and implement adjustments to minimize downtime, reduce energy consumption, and enhance system performance.
    • Use data-driven analysis to refine and optimize control strategies, machine setups, and system integration.
  5. Troubleshooting and Complex Issue Resolution:

    • Lead efforts to troubleshoot and resolve complex automation system issues, including PLC, SCADA, HMI, and network problems.
    • Perform advanced diagnostics and root cause analysis to address system malfunctions or inefficiencies.
    • Provide technical leadership during system troubleshooting and act as the primary point of contact for addressing major issues.
  6. Mentorship and Team Leadership:

    • Mentor and guide junior and mid-level engineers, providing coaching on system design, programming, troubleshooting, and best practices.
    • Share expertise and facilitate knowledge transfer through training, workshops, and technical discussions.
    • Lead performance reviews, providing feedback, and helping engineers grow their technical skills and career paths.
  7. Safety and Compliance:

    • Ensure that all control systems and automation designs comply with safety regulations and industry standards (e.g., NEC, IEC, OSHA, NFPA).
    • Promote a culture of safety within the engineering team and across the project lifecycle, ensuring that all work is carried out with a focus on minimizing risk.
    • Lead safety audits, risk assessments, and ensure that corrective actions are implemented when necessary.
  8. Technology and Innovation Leadership:

    • Stay current with advancements in automation, control systems, PLC technologies, and industrial networking.
    • Evaluate and implement new technologies, tools, and methodologies that improve system performance, reduce costs, or provide innovative solutions to clients.
    • Drive innovation within the team by introducing new techniques, technologies, or automation strategies to enhance efficiency and performance.
  9. Documentation and Reporting:

    • Oversee the preparation and maintenance of comprehensive documentation for all control systems, including design specifications, test plans, and maintenance records.
    • Provide regular reports to senior management, clients, and other stakeholders on project progress, system performance, and ongoing improvements.
    • Ensure documentation is complete, accurate, and aligned with company standards for future audits or reference.
  10. Collaboration with Cross-Functional Teams:

    • Collaborate with other engineering teams (e.g., electrical, mechanical, and software engineering) to ensure alignment between control systems and broader project goals.
    • Act as the key technical liaison between the engineering team, operations, and external clients or contractors.
    • Communicate complex technical information effectively to non-technical stakeholders, ensuring clear understanding of project scope, progress, and results.

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • Expert knowledge of electrical control systems, including PLCs, SCADA, HMI, sensors, actuators, and automation technologies.
  • Advanced proficiency in PLC programming languages (e.g., Ladder Logic, Structured Text, Function Block Diagram) and SCADA systems.
  • Extensive experience in designing, optimizing, and troubleshooting complex automation systems across a variety of industrial applications.
  • Strong understanding of industrial networking protocols (e.g., Modbus, Profibus, Ethernet/IP) and system integration techniques.
  • In-depth knowledge of electrical codes, safety standards, and regulatory compliance (e.g., NEC, IEC, OSHA).
  • Proven leadership and team management experience, with the ability to guide and mentor engineers at all levels.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex system issues effectively.
  • Strong project management skills, with experience overseeing large-scale automation projects.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey technical information to internal teams, clients, and stakeholders.

Educational Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Professional certifications in PLC programming, control systems, project management (e.g., PMP), or industrial automation technologies (e.g., Siemens, Allen-Bradley) are highly desirable.

  • Leading the development and deployment of sophisticated automation solutions for large-scale power distribution networks, ensuring efficiency and reliability.

  • Overseeing the architecture, integration, and troubleshooting of complex SCADA and PLC systems in advanced automation projects.
  • Electrical Safety Standards and Codes (IEC, NEC)

  • Driving compliance with IEC, NEC, and global safety standards, conducting risk assessments, and implementing safety protocols across automation projects.

Experience:

  • 8+ years of experience in automation systems engineering, PLC programming, industrial control systems, and SCADA.
  • Proven track record of managing and executing complex automation projects from design through to implementation and optimization.
  • Significant experience in troubleshooting and resolving advanced technical issues in automation and control systems.
  • Experience in managing teams and mentoring junior engineers in the automation and control systems field.

Tools and Technologies:

  • Expertise in PLC programming software (e.g., Siemens TIA Portal, Rockwell Studio 5000, Allen-Bradley).
  • Familiarity with SCADA software (e.g., Wonderware, Ignition, Siemens WinCC) and HMI development tools.
  • Experience with electrical design software and simulation tools (e.g., AutoCAD, MATLAB, LabVIEW).
  • Knowledge of industrial control protocols, communication networks, and cybersecurity best practices.
