Job Title: Analytical and Laboratory Instrumentation Engineer

Job Summary:

The Mid-Level Analytical and Laboratory Instrumentation Engineer is responsible for the installation, maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, and optimization of analytical and laboratory instruments used for scientific research and quality control. This role involves working with complex instrumentation systems such as chromatographs, spectrometers, and analyzers, ensuring they operate efficiently, accurately, and in compliance with industry standards. The engineer will play a key role in optimizing laboratory processes, leading troubleshooting efforts, and supporting cross-functional teams in maintaining high-quality data output and regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. System Design, Installation, and Integration:

    • Oversee the installation and integration of new laboratory instruments and analytical systems, ensuring that they meet the required specifications and are compatible with existing laboratory systems.
    • Lead the configuration and calibration of laboratory instruments such as chromatography systems, mass spectrometers, and spectrophotometers to ensure accurate measurements.
    • Work with senior engineers to develop system optimization strategies for improving the performance of laboratory instrumentation.
  2. Calibration and Maintenance:

    • Perform calibration of analytical instruments regularly and as needed to ensure accuracy and reliability of measurement results.
    • Develop and execute preventive maintenance schedules for laboratory equipment, ensuring minimal downtime and prolonged system life.
    • Troubleshoot and repair laboratory equipment, identifying root causes of technical issues and implementing corrective actions to restore normal function.
  3. Troubleshooting and Issue Resolution:

    • Lead efforts in diagnosing and resolving complex issues related to laboratory instruments, such as calibration errors, mechanical malfunctions, or software-related problems.
    • Provide troubleshooting support and technical expertise to laboratory staff, ensuring that instruments remain operational during critical periods.
    • Maintain detailed records of repairs, calibrations, and maintenance activities for regulatory compliance and system performance tracking.
  4. Data Collection, Analysis, and Reporting:

    • Collect and analyze data from laboratory instrumentation systems, ensuring that data is accurate, reliable, and aligned with experimental or quality control objectives.
    • Generate detailed reports on the performance and status of laboratory instruments, including any deviations from expected performance.
    • Assist in the development of data analysis protocols, using statistical software and tools to evaluate performance data, trends, and system optimization opportunities.
  5. Compliance and Quality Assurance:

    • Ensure all laboratory instruments meet regulatory standards and industry requirements (e.g., FDA, ISO, GMP) for performance, calibration, and maintenance.
    • Lead or assist in audits of laboratory instrumentation systems, ensuring all systems comply with internal and external regulatory audits.
    • Collaborate with the quality control team to ensure that instrumentation procedures meet quality assurance standards, and that results align with established benchmarks.
  6. Process Improvement and System Optimization:

    • Continuously evaluate laboratory processes and instrumentation performance to identify opportunities for improvement, whether in system efficiency, data quality, or operational workflows.
    • Implement changes and optimizations to improve system performance and reduce errors, ensuring minimal downtime and consistent data generation.
    • Recommend upgrades or new technology implementations to improve laboratory capacity or automation.
  7. Collaboration with Cross-Functional Teams:

    • Work with laboratory scientists, engineers, and quality control teams to ensure that laboratory instruments support ongoing research, product testing, or quality assurance initiatives.
    • Act as a technical advisor for laboratory teams, providing support on how to use instruments effectively and efficiently.
    • Communicate with other departments (e.g., R&D, production, and regulatory affairs) to ensure laboratory systems are aligned with project goals and compliance requirements.
  8. Training and Mentoring:

    • Mentor junior engineers and technicians, providing training on instrument calibration, troubleshooting techniques, and best practices for laboratory instrumentation.
    • Develop and deliver training materials on laboratory instrumentation systems and safety protocols to ensure proper usage and compliance with operational procedures.
  9. Documentation and Record-Keeping:

    • Ensure that all maintenance, calibration, and repair activities are documented in accordance with regulatory requirements and company policies.
    • Maintain clear, accurate, and up-to-date records of instrumentation performance, calibration schedules, and audit trails for compliance purposes.
    • Assist in preparing documentation and reports for internal and external audits or inspections.

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • Strong understanding of analytical and laboratory instrumentation systems, including chromatographs, mass spectrometers, spectrophotometers, pH meters, and other laboratory equipment.
  • Proficiency in calibration techniques and troubleshooting of analytical instruments.
  • Knowledge of quality assurance and regulatory compliance standards (e.g., FDA, ISO, GMP) for laboratory instrumentation.
  • Experience with data analysis tools and software for managing and interpreting data from laboratory instruments.
  • Familiarity with laboratory software, control systems (SCADA, PLC), and data logging systems for instrument performance monitoring.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to address complex issues in instrumentation systems.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across different departments and mentor junior staff.

Educational Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Instrumentation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related technical field.
  • Certifications related to analytical instrumentation, laboratory practices, or quality assurance (e.g., Six Sigma, ISO certifications) are a plus.

Experience:

  • 3-5 years of experience in laboratory instrumentation, analytical systems, or related fields, with hands-on experience in the calibration, troubleshooting, and optimization of laboratory equipment.
  • Proven ability to work with complex laboratory instrumentation systems and perform in-depth troubleshooting.
  • Experience with regulatory compliance and maintaining documentation for laboratory instruments is highly desirable.

Tools and Technologies:

  • Proficiency in operating and maintaining laboratory instruments (e.g., gas chromatographs, mass spectrometers, UV-Vis spectrophotometers).
  • Familiarity with laboratory software for performance monitoring and data analysis (e.g., LIMS, ChemStation, Power BI).
  • Knowledge of data analysis tools and software (e.g., Excel, Minitab, OriginLab) for interpreting instrument results.
