Job Title: Analytical and Laboratory Instrumentation Engineer

Job Summary:

The Junior Analytical and Laboratory Instrumentation Engineer is responsible for supporting the setup, calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of laboratory instruments used in scientific analysis. This role involves working under the supervision of senior engineers to ensure that laboratory equipment such as chromatographs, spectrometers, and other testing devices are properly calibrated, functioning optimally, and operating in compliance with industry standards. The engineer will assist in troubleshooting issues, collecting and analyzing data, and ensuring that instruments are meeting performance and safety requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Instrument Setup and Calibration:

    • Assist in the setup, installation, and calibration of laboratory instruments, including chromatographs, spectrometers, pH meters, and other analytical instruments.
    • Support senior engineers in the calibration of instruments to ensure accuracy and precision during experiments and testing.
    • Help ensure that all instruments are calibrated according to manufacturer specifications and industry standards.
  2. Routine Maintenance and Troubleshooting:

    • Perform routine maintenance tasks on laboratory instruments, including cleaning, replacing parts, and performing diagnostic tests to ensure reliable performance.
    • Assist in troubleshooting issues with laboratory instruments, such as sensor malfunctions, calibration errors, or performance deviations.
    • Work with senior engineers to identify and resolve minor problems, escalating more complex issues as necessary.
  3. Data Collection and Documentation:

    • Assist in collecting and recording data from laboratory instruments, ensuring that the data is accurate and aligned with experimental requirements.
    • Help maintain detailed records of calibration, maintenance, and performance logs for laboratory instruments.
    • Ensure that all documentation is up to date and in compliance with internal standards and regulatory requirements.
  4. Compliance and Quality Assurance:

    • Help ensure that all instruments meet industry regulations, quality standards, and safety requirements.
    • Support compliance audits and inspections of laboratory instruments to ensure they adhere to regulatory standards (e.g., ISO 9001, GMP).
    • Assist in maintaining calibration and maintenance records to ensure instruments meet quality assurance standards.
  5. System Monitoring and Reporting:

    • Monitor the performance of laboratory instruments to ensure they are operating within the specified parameters.
    • Assist in generating reports on system performance, maintenance activities, and any issues encountered during instrument operation.
    • Help compile performance data and submit it for further analysis or review by senior engineers or management.
  6. Collaboration with Cross-Functional Teams:

    • Work closely with other engineers, laboratory technicians, and researchers to ensure instruments are functioning correctly and supporting ongoing experiments.
    • Provide technical assistance to laboratory staff in the proper use of instruments and help troubleshoot minor issues.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure that laboratory equipment supports experimental needs and contributes to the overall success of projects.
  7. Learning and Development:

    • Continuously develop technical knowledge of analytical and laboratory instrumentation, including new technologies and methodologies.
    • Participate in training programs to enhance understanding of laboratory instruments, calibration techniques, and troubleshooting methods.
    • Stay informed about new trends in analytical instrumentation and laboratory technologies to enhance efficiency and accuracy in the laboratory.

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • Basic understanding of analytical instruments, including chromatographs, spectrometers, and other laboratory testing devices.
  • Familiarity with calibration methods and best practices for laboratory instruments.
  • Ability to follow instructions carefully and assist in performing maintenance and troubleshooting tasks.
  • Strong attention to detail to ensure the accuracy of data and proper instrument performance.
  • Ability to work in a laboratory environment and follow safety protocols.
  • Strong communication skills to collaborate with senior engineers, laboratory staff, and other teams.
  • Problem-solving abilities to assist in identifying and resolving minor issues with instrumentation systems.

Educational Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Instrumentation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related technical field.
  • Coursework or certifications related to analytical instrumentation, laboratory practices, or industrial processes is a plus.

Experience:

  • 1-2 years of experience in laboratory instrumentation or related fields. Internships or academic projects in instrumentation, laboratory testing, or quality assurance are advantageous.
  • Exposure to laboratory environments and hands-on experience with scientific equipment during coursework or internships is beneficial.

Tools and Technologies:

  • Familiarity with laboratory instruments such as gas chromatographs, mass spectrometers, UV-Vis spectrophotometers, and pH meters.
  • Exposure to data logging and temperature monitoring software for cold chain management or other laboratory applications.
  • Basic knowledge of diagnostic tools and equipment used in the calibration and maintenance of laboratory instruments.

Other Requirements:

  • Strong eagerness to learn and develop a deep understanding of laboratory instrumentation technologies.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work under the guidance of senior engineers or technical staff.
  • Willingness to work in a laboratory environment, including assisting with hands-on tasks related to instrumentation and testing.
  • Strong organizational skills to assist with maintaining schedules, documentation, and reporting.
