Job Title: Aerospace Instrumentation Engineer

Job Summary:

The Aerospace Instrumentation Engineer Manager is responsible for overseeing the design, integration, calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of avionics and flight control systems, ensuring the precision, reliability, and safety of aircraft navigation, communication, and control systems. This leadership role involves managing a team of engineers and technicians, coordinating projects, ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards, and continuously improving processes related to avionics instrumentation. The Manager will play a key role in the strategic planning and execution of projects while driving innovation and maintaining high operational standards in aerospace instrumentation.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Team Leadership and Management:

    • Lead and manage a team of aerospace instrumentation engineers and technicians, ensuring the team meets both performance and compliance standards.
    • Mentor and develop the team by providing technical guidance, professional development opportunities, and performance reviews.
    • Foster a collaborative and high-performance work environment, encouraging innovation and continuous improvement.
  2. System Design, Integration, and Optimization:

    • Oversee the design, installation, and integration of avionics and flight control systems, ensuring seamless operation of all critical systems such as navigation, communication, and control systems.
    • Drive efforts to improve system performance and reliability by optimizing avionics systems, introducing new technologies, and streamlining integration processes.
    • Manage the integration of precision instrumentation systems and ensure they are compatible with other aircraft systems.
  3. Regulatory Compliance and Safety Standards:

    • Ensure avionics, flight control systems, and emergency systems comply with regulatory standards (e.g., FAA, EASA, ISO 9001) and safety protocols.
    • Lead compliance audits and inspections to guarantee all systems and operations are in line with aviation industry regulations and safety standards.
    • Oversee the preparation of documentation required for certifications, regulatory audits, and inspections related to avionics and flight control systems.
  4. Calibration and Maintenance:

    • Oversee calibration activities for avionics systems, flight control systems, and other critical instrumentation to ensure that all systems meet the required accuracy and operational standards.
    • Ensure that maintenance schedules are adhered to and that systems are functioning optimally, minimizing downtime and ensuring operational efficiency.
    • Lead troubleshooting and corrective actions for avionics and control system issues, providing technical expertise to the team for complex problems.
  5. Project Management and Execution:

    • Manage projects related to avionics system design, installation, calibration, and upgrades, ensuring they are delivered on time, within budget, and meet the required specifications.
    • Develop project plans, allocate resources effectively, and track project progress against timelines and goals.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (engineering, production, R&D) to align avionics system developments with operational and strategic objectives.
  6. Performance Monitoring and Improvement:

    • Monitor the performance of avionics and flight control systems, identifying areas for improvement and ensuring the systems meet functional, safety, and regulatory requirements.
    • Lead efforts in system optimization, focusing on enhancing reliability, accuracy, and efficiency in avionics systems.
    • Analyze operational data to identify trends and areas of potential system failures, implementing corrective measures to improve overall performance.
  7. Technical Leadership and Innovation:

    • Lead the technical direction of avionics instrumentation systems, driving the integration of cutting-edge technologies and industry best practices.
    • Evaluate emerging technologies and new avionics systems that could improve system performance or reduce costs, implementing them where appropriate.
    • Ensure that the team stays updated on advancements in avionics technology and that the organization adopts innovative solutions to stay competitive.
  8. Collaboration with Stakeholders:

    • Act as the primary point of contact for all avionics-related technical issues, providing expertise to internal teams and external stakeholders.
    • Collaborate with customers, vendors, and suppliers to ensure that avionics systems meet technical requirements and specifications.
    • Liaise with regulatory authorities to ensure that all avionics systems and projects meet compliance standards.
  9. Documentation and Reporting:

    • Ensure proper documentation of calibration, testing, and maintenance activities for avionics and flight control systems, ensuring that it meets regulatory and internal standards.
    • Prepare and present technical reports, performance data, and system analysis to senior management, highlighting key areas for improvement and performance metrics.
    • Maintain detailed records of project milestones, team progress, and compliance reports, providing transparency and accountability throughout the project lifecycle.
  10. Budget and Resource Management:

    • Develop and manage the budget for avionics systems, including calibration, maintenance, upgrades, and new system integration projects.
    • Ensure that resources (personnel, equipment, and materials) are allocated efficiently, managing costs while meeting project objectives and deadlines.
    • Monitor the financial aspects of projects, ensuring cost-effective solutions are implemented without compromising quality or safety standards.

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • Extensive knowledge of avionics systems, flight control systems, and precision instrumentation for aircraft navigation, communication, and control.
  • Strong understanding of regulatory requirements for avionics and flight control systems (e.g., FAA, EASA, ISO 9001).
  • Proven ability to lead and manage teams, providing direction, technical expertise, and mentorship to engineers and technicians.
  • Strong project management skills, including budgeting, resource allocation, and managing timelines for avionics and control system projects.
  • Expertise in the calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of avionics, flight control systems, and safety systems.
  • Ability to identify areas for continuous improvement, driving innovation and optimizing system performance.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to present technical information to senior management and external stakeholders.
  • Proficiency with diagnostic tools, software for system analysis, and data analysis tools (e.g., MATLAB, LabVIEW, Excel).

Educational Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Professional certifications related to avionics systems, flight control systems, or regulatory compliance (e.g., Six Sigma, FAA certifications) are highly desirable.

    Strategically overseeing the design, development, and integration of advanced instrumentation systems for avionics and flight controls.
  • Ensuring system compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements while driving process optimization and innovation.
  • Safety and Emergency Systems:

    Managing the instrumentation design and testing for safety-critical systems, such as fire suppression, oxygen delivery, and emergency evacuation mechanisms.
  • Leading risk assessments, fail-safe evaluations, and certification processes to ensure system reliability and compliance.
  • Precision Instrumentation:

    Establishing and managing calibration, validation, and quality assurance processes for high-precision instruments used in navigation, communication, and control.
  • Driving continuous improvement initiatives to enhance instrumentation performance, accuracy, and environmental resilience.
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams and mentoring staff to advance best practices in aerospace instrumentation engineering.

Experience:

  • 7+ years of experience in avionics systems, flight control systems, or precision instrumentation within the aerospace industry, with at least 3 years in a leadership or managerial role.
  • Hands-on experience with the calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of avionics, flight control systems, and safety-critical systems in aircraft.
  • Proven track record of managing large-scale avionics projects, ensuring compliance with industry standards and operational goals.
  • Experience in driving process optimization, managing cross-functional teams, and providing technical leadership in avionics system development.

Tools and Technologies:

  • Expertise with avionics testing and diagnostic tools, including flight data recorders, radar systems, and communication equipment.
  • Familiarity with performance monitoring tools, simulation software, and avionics testing software (e.g., MATLAB, LabVIEW).
  • Experience with statistical analysis tools for performance data evaluation and reporting (e.g., Excel, Minitab, Power BI).
