Maintenance Technician – HVAC Systems on Vessels and Platforms

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Mid-Level HVAC Maintenance Technician is responsible for performing preventive and corrective maintenance on shipboard and offshore HVAC systems, including air conditioning, ventilation, heating, and refrigeration equipment. The role involves diagnosing faults, executing repairs, optimizing performance, and ensuring compliance with marine operational standards and safety protocols. The technician operates semi-independently and supports junior team members while ensuring system reliability in diverse marine environments.

Key Responsibilities:

    • Conduct scheduled preventive maintenance of HVAC systems such as AHUs, chillers, compressors, heat exchangers, ductwork, fans, dampers, and control systems.

    • Diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical faults in HVAC components including motor drives, control valves, sensors, and thermostats.

    • Monitor and adjust airflow, refrigerant charge, temperatures, and humidity levels to maintain proper environmental conditions.

    • Inspect and service ventilation systems for accommodation areas, control rooms, machinery spaces, and hazardous zones.

    • Assist in the testing and balancing (TAB) of ventilation systems and verify airflow distribution and pressure regulation.

    • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, part replacements, service logs, and system performance reports.

    • Support emergency repairs and system restarts, especially during drydock periods, equipment upgrades, or post-shutdowns.

    • Ensure compliance with marine safety codes, environmental standards, and refrigerant handling regulations.

    • Mentor junior technicians and provide guidance during routine inspections and maintenance activities.

    • Coordinate with shipboard engineering staff or offshore platform teams for access, planning, and execution of maintenance work.

Key Focus Areas:

  1. Technical Fault Diagnosis and Corrective Action
    – Independently troubleshoot mechanical and control issues in HVAC equipment and restore system performance.

  2. Preventive Maintenance Compliance
    – Ensure regular maintenance is performed as per OEM recommendations and vessel maintenance schedules.

  3. Marine HVAC Operation Standards
    – Maintain operational readiness of HVAC systems critical to crew comfort, electronic cooling, and air quality, even in harsh marine conditions.

  4. Team Support and Knowledge Transfer
    – Supervise or assist junior technicians while upholding safety and quality workmanship.

Qualifications and Skills:

    • Diploma or associate degree in HVAC, Marine Engineering Technology, or Mechanical Systems Maintenance.

    • 3–6 years of hands-on experience in HVAC maintenance, preferably on ships or offshore platforms.

    • Proficient in interpreting wiring diagrams, HVAC schematics, P&IDs, and technical manuals.

    • Skilled in the use of HVAC diagnostic tools, refrigerant handling equipment, pressure gauges, and airflow meters.

    • Familiarity with marine HVAC systems for accommodation, engine rooms, hazardous areas, and life support systems.

    • Solid understanding of refrigeration cycle, ventilation principles, and electrical troubleshooting.

    • Working knowledge of marine regulations (IMO, SOLAS, MARPOL) and refrigerant safety practices.

    • Capable of working in confined spaces, at heights, and in offshore conditions following safety protocols.

Preferred:

    • Certification in EPA Section 608, STCW, or marine refrigeration systems.

    • Experience with HVAC systems on LNG carriers, naval ships, FPSOs, or offshore platforms.

    • Familiarity with BMS integration, HVAC alarms, and interlocks with fire/gas detection systems.

    • Basic knowledge of HVAC automation and control logic (e.g., VFDs, PLCs).
